What a wonderful format! Great-looking collection and well-organized, Ken. I have a couple of Sony MD portables and a pair of home recorders in my main system. I have been amassing a number of MD blanks because I use MD a lot.

Thanks Hugo. Just a question on your personal opinion about minidisc format and sound quality. Do you think minidisc format is as good as CD?

What's your input mastering you preferred?

I have been using the MiniDisc format for about ten years. My first portable MD unit is the the one I previously presented. I have to go by recollection, but I believe it has been about five years since I adopted the MD format for recording my Master, then dubbing from the MD Master to compact cassette, open-reel, Elcaset. And I don't intend to discontinue using MD to make all of my initial recordings before making multiple copies to other formats.

I used minidisc in lp mode to record my favorite college radio show in the 90's, it was a much cheaper alternative to DAT back then and the battery lasted much longer for portable use. The sound quality was not the same but was sufficient.

Unfortunately the format didn't survive and was not so popular in Asia. I only learned about the minidisc few years back when I purchase the first unit from eBay.

I love minidisc and for me it is a beautiful format that arrived too late, mp3 killed it. I still use mine a lot though. I have a few including 2 MZN-910's.

I really like that MZ-N10 with the base. I'm wishing I bought one with a record function back in the day. I can't seem to find the Sonic Stage CD that came with mine originally and I can't find an old Sonic Stage download link that works.

i have several mini disks as well and usually record my favorite music on them. I used to get low quality result till i read Hugo's post : "guide to a good recording" then i realized where the problem was. I stopped using headphone jack as output source and instead started using line out jack. 2nd: i have been using a DAC that improves sound quality to almost perfect condition. I will place a different topic with pictures to show the setting.

thanks for sharing the pictures of your mini disks

I wasn't receiving replies from here...
I'm not an expert in Minidisc. I have just a few portable players and a small-factor SONY HIFI (with needs to be repaired since years). Minidisc is probably good enough as a CD, but I cannot assure. To me the problem of CDs and digital music is the digital recording, which almost always sound bright and empty, some times harsh.
I don't know what's the problem but I bet it's the DAC, not the digital medium itself. When I digitise an analog recording, it looses some body in the sound, ending up in a somewhat empty sound, but it doesn't get bright. At least with my equipment.

Anyway, since some years I prefer to get vinyl as source and -if possible- vinyl from analog source and mastering, but it's not always possible. If not, I use my EQ with digital sources to lower around 2dB at 16kHz so it sounds better to me. Less bright and harsh.
    But that's only my opinion.
