I enjoyed the 1979 Which Report and comments so much that when I saw this one on Ebay I hit "Buy It Now" to share with you.

Definitely no grails in the article. The ones they tested were "Not much more than you'd have to pay for a reasonable radio on its own". However, there some colourful boxes including two which family members bought new (my Philips Roller 2 and my Mums Sony CFS210L). From the picture I was expecting to find a Sharp QT50 (which my sister had) as well but it turns out there are three look alikes. By that time Sharp had moved on to the QTF40.

For the Walkman and CD Player fans there is a small section in the "Christmas Best Buys" section which gives you an idea of prices.

Other detailed reviews include Point and Shoot cameras, of which the best buys such as the Canon Sureshot Supreme are all over £100 while the "Best All Round" is one of the few with a zoom lens; the Pentax Zoom 70 at £200.

Even more eye wateringly expensive are the Word Processing Packages with Microsoft Word (on 5 1/4 floppys) being listed at £305, over half the price of the Amstrad PC1512 they tested it on !

Love this sort of stuff...reminds me of drooling over any audio catalogue back in the day. Some cool minis in there :)

To me it was less about catalogues but physical shops - Dixons, Currys, Laskys, Comet. I could never go past one without popping in to see what was new.
My interest in gadgets extended to VCRs, TVs (although I had to change jobs to afford a decent one), musical keyboards, calculators, home computers etc.
I once saw advertised in a newspaper what thought would be one of the best jobs ever - being a buyer for Dixons.

Non specialist shops seemed to have a much wider range of electronic goods as well.
My Philips Roller2 came from Co-op Homeworld which I often went in to buy stuff for my house.
The nearest shop to my house (about a half mile walk) was a huge Carrefour Hypermarket (which is now Asda Walmart).
They had quite a lot of branded electronics together with quite a good Record department.
I can remember marvelling at a Sharp FST TV there, which with an almost rectangular screen looked incredibly futuristic.

Interesting to note the comments in the article against several units that you might have difficulty finding one.
If neither one of the big chains or your local independent retailer had a unit you would probably end up having to go the
Edgware Road in London where there were dozens of electronics shops with a huge selection.
On interest has anyone been there recently ? Are there still any interesting shops there?
I haven't been to London since 2012 so don't know.

Love it, these old scans are very cool. I was pleased to see the Philips TRO on the list as that was one of my early boom boxes.

Nice to see a whole bunch of real world boxes similar to what we owned back in the day. Thanks for sharing.

Roller Phone was a brand name, not to be confused with Philips Roller!
