I just signed up to the page & would like to share a first glance at my collection.. These are 3 out of 5 boomboxes in my collection: Sharp GF-777Z ..got this one in very rough shape and i'm still on my way restoring it without the grills: I already got everything mechanical working again, the tuner section (plastic window) was nearly 100 % blind - some polishing worked wonders. The sparkled area around will be restored next. Still thinking about coloring the whole unit since it got some really harsh wounds that can't be cleaned. imagine the possibilities (not my photo or work!): The next one is my precious & personal favorite. Got this one 10 years ago from HongKong: Sharp GF-999 , aka The Searcher (didn't fit the new labels obviously - but i will, later ) without grills: the most interesting point here is the lettering: (is it chinese, japanese, korean? - info appreciated - I operate it with the knowledge from a 777-manual ) Both of them, since we all like to show off : The third one is an Intersound - J 747S (Super Jumbo) - known under different AKA's: I like this one for its sheer appearance All of these 3 boomboxes are in wonderful working order. I do have 2 other boxes, but they both need some fixing. I may show 'em later. Feel free to ask any questions -Timecop1987
Thanks for the replies! out of these 3 the 999 sounds the best imho - but the 777 performs quite similar. The SuperJumbo is just a looker..can't stand against any quality unit. I have a Telefunken Hifi Studio 1M sitting in the garage ..that one outperforms 'em all.
The 777 and 999 are basically the same unit. The SuperJumbo is iconic and loud, but that's all folks. The Studio 1M is so good that it makes all other boomboxes sound like plastic toys. It's a beast from another planet that can only be challenged by super units like the Sonys FH and similar 3-piecers/combos. Don't keep it in the garage or you'll ruin it.
I guessed that is just someone's imagination running wild with Photoshop. The issue with any repainting is how to not loose the writing on the box. If you go for exactly the same colour you could mask it. Otherwise I don't know.
