Wow - that Sony really is something special, especially when the web says it dates back to 1979. A digital tuner and full logic tape controls was as futuristic as Face Recognition on a smartphone is today. It certainly cost though. The BOE inflation calculator suggests £1392 in todays money, while I have mentioned before that I bought a new Honda motorbike for £500 that year. So that "Boombox2 was very much the Iphone X of its time. For those outside the UK the retailer was House of Frazer, and upmarket department store who is still around today. https://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/?cm...|mt:e&ef_id=WhM2qQAACTUcctmU:20180118200139:s However, they stopped selling electricals at about the same time that the Supermarkets started selling them.
@nickeccles You are Back with a Bang!!! Friday night is almost here, you must post more photos at our AA thread here "beer and bboxes"!
Todays news about House of Fraser, where Nick's Sony was originally bought, closing half of their stores made me think of this picture. Of course the fact that House of Fraser are no longer selling anything appealing that is part of the problem. You can't run a department store selling nothing but over-priced clothing, perfume, and kitchenware yet they closed their electrical department years ago. I walked through the local shop a couple of weeks ago and there was nothing that appealed to me a t all. In the past they did quite well from me as I bought both an expensive TV and a £150 DVD player from them (back when that was a good price). Quite a lot of news stories have compared them to John Lewis who appear to be doing quite well sell still sell a fairly good range of AV gear and give a better guarantee than almost any other company. Recently I bought my latest Ipad from them after spending a nice quiet hour comparing the different models in the shop (which definitely wouldn't have been possible in the Apple Store). Are there any department stores in other countries that are still worth visiting ?
