Hi My name is John. I have a vintage barely used Denon DCP-30 disc player.. I have not used in in 20+ years. I cleaned it and replaced the batteries. It will not power on with either the batteries or power cord. Any suggestions?
DCP-30 does not look like much but it is one of the better Discmans out there. I managed to fix a few, here is one already fixed and recapped with FineGold "Muse-series" caps: DCP-30 is one of the easiest Discmans to open. From the list of my fixes: 1) check power/DC jack, reflow it 2) check Q801, in one of mine it was toast 3) start with C107 but check all electrolytics around DC for leakage Nice thing about DCP30/50 is that Kaosun of kaosuncd.com reverse-engineered DCP-150 and can upgrade these cheaper models to the status of the Best-Discman-Ever-made
You can see some crust (corrosion) around the green and red jacks on Jorge's Unit. This get inside the female connection as well and there's a chance you won't power with a good cleaning. Not having power could be several issues but it's odd that both battery and wall-wart don't work. You'll have to do a step at a time to rule out the easy stuff first. Pictures of the jacks and battery terminals would help and are you using the Denon Wall Wart or something else? Denon has center pin "+" which I think is the opposite of Sony.
@Mister X - your Kung-Fu is better than mine ... I do not see it maybe it is a digital "pixie-dust"? I know that volume, h/p (green) and line-out (red) had not been DeoxIt-ed yet, at that time I did it only after Discman was put back together. Then had a few Discmans with broken volume and had to change my routine In any case, this particular Discman can not have even virtual crust/corrosion no more - it is in Digital Heaven
Your best bet is Kaosun at kaosuncd.com or contact him through eBay here: kaosuncd886 He can fix ANY Discman and his service is amazingly cheap! over the last months a few S2G members had offered their repair services to the community, maybe they will see your post. I am a bit overwhelmed right now with rebuilding my own Discmans collection, have layers of broken Discmans on my desk
Wise Choice! Ask Kaosun if DCP-30 can be upgraded to DCP-150 status. I am going to send him yet another DCP-50 for this upgrade but not quite sure if DCP-30 can be upgraded: they look similar to me but what do I know... If doable, then you will have the Ultimate Discman!! Might be an extra 50-100 bucks but from my personal experience it is well-worth a few extra bucks! In my previous/lost collection I did not have Denon DCP-100 or Sony D-555 (as I have now), but Kaosun’s upgrade of my Denon DCP-50 onto DCP-150 status sounded as good as my all-time-favorites Sony D-50 MkII and Technics SL-XP5... Just a thought...
I will ask. Prior to your original response I was in the process of sending it to an authorized Denon electronics repair shop in New Jersey. I told them what model I had. When they got it, I received a response that the service manual and parts no longer exist for that model, and there was nothing they can do.. I am glad you responded with your posts. I have a Sony car discman from same time period which works. Any thoughts on how it compares to Denon DCP-30? Is the difference between DCP-30 and 150 a power upgrade? Thanks John
Denon DCP-30 will sound similar to your Sony Car Discman, you can see for yourself here that internally they are quite similar. No, it is not. you can upgrade Discman power supply yourself by getting $50 iFi 9V power supply or even go Full Monty with 9V linear regulated power supply Kaosun puts reverse-engineered dual DAC from DCP-150 and completely rewires the Discman, more info at his website: Denon DCP30 Audio Modification (this search answered my own Q: Kaosun can do DCP-30 upgrade)
Thanks.. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Do you repair full size Denon CD player from late 80’s early 90’s? Or would the person you recommended?.. be worth fixing?
