I have no problem with the uni-speaker boxes and in some cases they have some really beautiful designs. There's some opinions that mono actually sounds better than stereo with the right set-up. Most of the good stuff is late 70's, and if your lucky, the military style is the fashizzle but extremely rare or expensive. I do tend to pick these up from time to time and was lucky to find this little SuperScope CR-330L (designed by Marantz). While I can't use the 220V cord, the 9v wall wart works great. This thing is heavy with metal panels and the old school buttons. It's about 1.5 x heavier than a similar sized PMD unit but I have to believe it's one of the smaller Marantz/Superscope Portable Tape Decks. Paired up with my thrift find Pioneer SE-50 Headphones, my bootleg Devo Tape sounds outstanding! For some reason the play won't engage unless I hit FF first and then hit play. There's the four windows in the front that either have a light or something else that also doesn't work but someday I'll dig into it. Oh yea, this also has a PA input, I bet it gave Mr. Microphone a run for it's money back in the day!

Nice pick Longman, I have one of those in the stacks, it never surprises me how heavy the 70's boxes are even these little ones. Did you catch that SuperScope CR-4500? Now that looks cool and huge.
