The JDM model index of this Sony is Sony CF-1990.

The actual box in your picture is now in Texas and was mine. You should speak to member JamesRC550, I'm sure he'll sell it to you.

Looks a lot like JVC 550 to me, dont know why...
How do these Mono bboxes play stereo cassettes: just pick up L or R channel or mix them both into Mono? Anybody knows?

Since Philips designed the compact cassette for dictation machines it started out as mono. I may be wrong but I would guess mono decks would always use mono heads as they would be cheaper. For stereo the mono track was split into two halves so a mono head will just pick up both halves at the same time. On any normal recording (e.g a live classical one) the tracks will be very similar to each other anyway, with perhaps a bit more brass on one side and strings on the other.

From a technical point of view I would think azimuth adjustment would be more critical on a mono deck than a stereo one as the head is wider so a smaller inaccuracy will lead to the two sides of the head picking up anti-phase signals.

Of course most mono cassette recorders were cheap and quite Lo-Fi so people weren't expecting superb treble anyway.

I have both the Sony CF1990 and the JVC 550...JVC is slightly bigger, while Sony is definitely heavier and better build quality.

Yahoo Auctions Japan - you can get one, they are pretty common there but not really on the cheap side. The Japanese really love their Sony's

Yes RR those are great memories. If there was a member in Hong Kong to buy from that is humble easy to deal with & packs like a champ that would be peppinhk. Where ever he is I wish him the best & thank him for the very nice vintage audio that he sold to us in the USA.
