Another beauty, the Hitachi TRK-1 from 1982, this was heavily advertised world-wide but I've never been lucky enough to see one.

An old Hitachi Ad from 1974, it even has the stereo cassette I posted in the mega-thread sale thread.

@Mister X - they DID try... and it took them quite a few decades to realize that audio-crowd is different from Cars-or-Guns-aficionados, and those Babes (skinny or not) did not improve the sales... Raises the Q: Who Are those folks like Us? As in 'Who am I' movie by my beloved Jackie Chan ;)
The last time I saw a 'babe' in an audio-ad it was 20 years ago in Stereophile, next to the speakers of some wanna-be builder which had never materialized, it looked totally pathetic! Audio-Advisor also had a few Midwest-styled girls for their catalogs up until around 2015.

Chronologically, when was the last time that anyone saw a 'babe' (not female 'student' phased-out by Bose headphones) next to the hi-end audio-gear... in an official/published ad?

Up until about 1981, Hitachi and Sony had the highest quality boomers, in my opinion.....but after that they let JVC, Panasonic and Sharp take over......Sad....

I think with multiple cable channels in the 80's along with video tape, and eventually the internet, they quit using women for advertising these types of products. Back then there was only a few places to see a girl on the beach, either in a photo or real. Advertising took advantage of this and legitimized the photos.

I love old Sony Boomboxes, Hitachi tend to be a little more rare but the few I have are super nice. I think Sony just saw dollar signs and with improved manufacturing they could really crank them out. I'd say something like the Sony CFS-45S from 80 was the turning point for Sony. These are still nice but they kind of opened the door to the mid-level market.

When you read about how they wanted to price the Walkman TPS-L2 under $200.00 USD, think about how much money it must have cost to build a full-size boombox. Once they got that price under $100.00 I'm sure sales exploded.

I think they were inspired by B&O with this equipment.

I can imagine @Radio Raheem 's setup doing this in real life especially with a Memorex tape. :wink2

Those flat B & O Style (Table Top) Stereos are pretty neat, I've seen photos and auctions for them from various manufacturers. Most are completely under the radar and can be bought for cheap, I have no idea what the build quality is but I'd love to check one out.

Looking on archive.org is like mining for gold there's a ton of old magazines but you really have to look to find them, the search engine is a little difficult. Here's a gem from Bravo (Germany), I've never seen this before, it looks like a teen mag. From 1981, this looks like a contest but it has some iconic Hitachi Boomboxes.

There was a 9150 locally a couple years ago for cheap, it was on the other side of town and I never got a chance to grab it but I did get one of the bigger ones and it isn't too bad and it looks great. The Lo-D Microsystem is awesome looking but the speakers are weak, I'll have to bring it in and do a head to head with my AIWA 22 Desktop System which is one of my favorite small stereos.
