Hi Everyone! Are you tired of receiving walkmans that are badly packed for shipping? I wanted to share with you what I think is the best way to pack for sending your goods away. In this instance I'm packing 2 Aiwa PX-101 to later send to @Sergi. Since The italian post increases the costs of shipping by the size of your cardboard box, it would make sense to go for the a balance between Size, cost, and Impact absorption. I start by wrapping both tape players in individual sheets of bubble wrap. Next I segregate any additional small items/parts in a zip-lock bag to facilitate & not lose components. Just to be thorough the zip-lock bag also gets "bubble-wrapped". Im hoping that @Sergi can mount the EX AMorphous head of a sony wm-190 on the aiwas. Hopefully using either of the japanese or european model sent, he'll be able to make a "super" Aiwa with a 20-18,000 Hz Frequency response. A notable improvement. Now that all the components are individually wrapped, we can now wrap them together. Add 1-2 pages of newspaper just to top it off. Voila! Now with a bit of pressure and tape, nothing will be rattling around. Don't forget to add a return address Also if sending to a technician, It is preferable to also add a typed up document clearly stating the issues that you face with your machine. If you make the technician's life easier, hopefully you'll get your machine back quicker.
I'd add something like this for $4.00 USD, a waterproof box from the local hardware store, this is a Plano. Wrap the unit up and the plastic box with bubble wrap.
The information shared here by the member Command8 seems well thought out. It should be useful. Hopefully better than dealing with a tonne or two of those "packing peanuts," or whatever they're called. (Uh, are those pages from a Chinese or a Japanese newspaper? Are they vended in or near Milano, Italia?) And to Mister X: I suppose the person sending anything packed in that "waterproof box from the local hardware store" is, in effect, sending the protective, snap-tight container along with whatever is in the container. Not expecting the box back, that is. (I have to remember that this is the "Walkman" forum, with no sustained talk of bigger sound systems. But let me say there's obviously no shipping even a Sanyo M-7760K -- red in colour or otherwise, let alone a true boombox -- in that black-clawed packing gadget.)
I got lucky when my buddy brought me an AIWA CB-9, he found a plastic clam-shell suit case that was being thrown out and packed it with sound deadening foam. If you've ever bought that foam for your recording room you know it's ultra expensive, more than the box and the case were worth...
@Mister X The foam is totally awesome, just wish that its installation manual would mention that using double-stick tape is for the users who do not expect to live longer than two years post-sticking 'em to the wall!!! Thanks God some dude invented nails and a hammer! I feel the vibe of the OP, but... When Willy Herman sent restored Nak LX-5 back to me he forgot about the original double-box packaging, and it was a big mistake!!! The idea of a plastic box which will be used for shipping back seems like a good idea!!!
No, came in the box of the japanese px10 model. @Mister X the waterproof Idea seems a tad excessive, although I could wrap it in a plastic bag. It doesn't seem like a concern for shipping within and to the European union. Maybe UPS, as I've seen alot of videos from shango026 supporting the notion of shipping in the USA to not be handled with care.
Not only is it waterproof but it also closes up tight. Most of these boxes you could stand on giving a ton more protection then cardboard and padding. They come in a bunch of sizes and are only a few bucks, (Euros to the guy in the EU). I wouldn't even think about shipping a high end player any other way, I'm a little salty today, I had two packages come in, one opened and the other one sealed but empty....
