I can't believe it! Aiwa HS-PX303 in my hands.

Massive, massive, heartfelt thanks to Marian, Hugo and @Ball000 for enabling this to happen. The cassette? A personal mix of Disturbed on TDK SA-90. It will go on a lunch time walk with me, when the weather allows.

This has put a personal ghost of 30 years to rest and, yes, I'm actually shedding tears here. Thank you so very, very much.

So i am guessing that you received the walkman from Ball000 , belt from Marian and cassette from Hugo.

 

Actually, close. Ball000 gifted me the walkman, and it was well above my skill level. Needed far more than just a belt. So Marian brought it back to life and Hugo funded it as thanks for the work making the old forum posts accessible.

I have almost all Disturbed's analogue recordings, with the exception of their 1999 signed debut tape. There's one on Discogs for £1,000 and that's too rich for my blood. (there's an unsigned one for £300, but it's unsigned!) ... I'm happy with what I've got. Bought so much vinyl that they included a Disturbed slip mat with one of the orders! They did a piece in Metal Hammer recently, and I have the special with the signed handwritten sheet (the sheet appears to be photocopied and Draiman's signature is a bit weak) and the poster (which won't go up on my home office wall) ... I didn't know Draiman had been through so much. Good interview. Shame that, thanks to my hearing, I'll never see them live.

A friend and I were talking about a few other Metal bands and I think I'm going to start to meander through a few of them... at least, those whose words I can understand, and have a solid message behind their lyrics.

We'll see where things go. I'm hoping to get projects finished during down time in December... so we'll see how much time I have in 2019 to enjoy more metal.

 

What is wrong with your hearing, if you don't mind me asking?

 

It's a frequency resonance thing in my left ear. The wrong frequency at the wrong power, hurts. I can't listen to that much live music 'cause it's just too darn loud (little Back To The Future quote in there) - I have made exceptions, like James Last in Sheffield ... Last was my father's favourite band and he passed when I was 17. When I was 19/20 and in Sheffield, Last played there during the student holidays, so instead of going home, I stayed in Sheffield to attend. I bought the best seat in the circle I could afford. The last song they played was, "The Living Years"... I left that place in floods of tears.

I keep track of my hearing, and my next hospital test is in January.

Have you tried custom earplugs? I use this ones made to fit my ears and the turn down some frequencies by up to 27db, these are always in my bag and if I am anywhere with excessive noise they go straight in.

 

A good suggestion. I do have earplugs. I use them when I'm going to work in the server room for extended periods. I don't like them very much.

 

This custom mould earplugs i use are very good on speech and makes speech i a noisy environment clearer, so for me money well spent. Yes pricy at about £140 but you can't put price on your hearing, especially if you love music.

 

I'll have to look in to those. At the moment I'm saving up for one of my lunatic projects involving turning a small section of one of my books, into a couple of pages of comic. If I've got any wonga left from that insanity, I'll definitely look custom earplugs up.

I'm assuming you've got to go to them in person to be fitted.

 

You don't get them direct, you have to go to an audiologist and have an impression of your ears made. The impression is sent off to be made into bespoke moulds with the correct db reduction you request.
I will see if I can find the details of the lady that took my impressions and get it to you, it was a long time ago so not sure where the details are.

P.S. It will be made in the UK somewhere but the attenuation buttons will come from Eytimotic or ACS another company that makes them.

 

I'll ask at the hospital in Jan. They'll know for sure.

 

I have an aiwa px 303 aswell, it is indeed a great walkman and one of the only 2 i have left...i sold my dd9 only to be scammed on ebay (the seller kept my money and the walkman),,,,, will NEVER sell on ebay again....anyway congrats Michelle on a great piece
