I replaced the clutch gear + belt and the gears all turn fine apart from the auto-reverse switch not engaging consistently. Not sure why but that’s a problem for another day.

Currently dealing with an issue of the audio (I assume) shorting out when I reassemble the board to the mechanism. I can hear audio when I lift the board up a bit around where it’s supposed to be screwed down but the second it is, the audio stops. The motor and belt continue to move so nothing is stuck as far as I can tell.

I was able to kind of work around it previously by putting electric tape on various part of the board I suspected of touching but that was only temporary as some of the tape eventually snagged the rubber belt and ended up scrambling everything.

Looking for a more permanent fix, but haven’t been able to really find much info on this issue. Hoping someone who’s had this happened can chime in.

    Best regards!

Ok, so put one tape in those places at one time. You will find aproximate place where problem occurs.

@therealmccoykoi Are you sure you are dealing with a short ? The fact that lifting the board a little brings the sound back can also be an indication that slightly bending the PCB reconnects some broken traces.
I have seen broken traces on WM-B603 (that went away when bending board in a certain direction), which has same mechanism, but different electronics.
The initial symptom was similar (but in regard to power LED and motor drive): was working with board out, stopped working when board was screwed in the chassis.
Although electronics are not the same, the fact it was produced in the same era can mean similar problems (as likely same PCB manufacturer).

There are very few metal points that can actually cause a short:
    - motor
    - flywheels
    - black gear bracket

The rest of mech components sit too low and the clearance is higher. Where did you put the tape on the board that solved the issue ? I'm curious to find out more, as this seems to be a common issue.

I thought of somethong simillar. Maybe when you've put the tape, you made a pressure on cracked solder joint or the pcb itself. That's why it worked. Just check with tape where it was, you will be closer to the solution.
