    Hi guys,

I want to switch from my iPod to a regular portable mp3 player. I am looking for a device, which is able to "resume a track" where one switched it off. On the iPod, when you are listening to a podcast (not a regular music track), the podcast is resuming where you left off. I am looking for this "resume feature".
I am looking at the Sony NW-E394L, MP3-Player.
Does anyone know if this device has this resume function? Or any other device?

    Thanks in advance

My 2002 MPMan MP-f60 surely has this function :) I think most of them do, but after narrowing down the model, asking on Amazon or elsewhere would not hurt.

I personally would look for gapless playback. In fact, I bought a DAP last year that can do gapless for MP3 (which is a rare thing nowadays, despite that MP3 users have been clamoring for it for twenty years already!), but misplaced it and cannot find it. This is a reverse side of having a dedicated small device that is not ALWAYS needed. Although I keep losing my smartphone, I keep finding it because I need it every day :)

First you need to define "switched off". Just like iPods the Sonys have different levels of off. In response to your post I have been testing a Sony NW-E443 which is the closest I have to the one you mention. It hadn't been used for at least six months but turned on with 70% charge, but took a long time (probably longer than an iPod Touch) to get itself in a working state.

Pressing pause halfway through a track on a 2 hour long radio programme recording before going to bed, this morning it took a couple of seconds to wake up, in the same place on the same track.
I will now try switching off completely and then back on tomorrow and tell you what happened.

Regarding iPhones we have at least one game on one that locks up about once a week, and needs a complete power cycle of the phone to get it working again.

Thank you guys for the fast response. Gapless playback it is. The Sony NW-E394L doesn't have this feature. But the Sony NW-A55 LB does.

I still wonder why do you want a dedicated DAP instead of playing off your smartphone? Or you can use an old smartphone without cellular connection just as a DAP. With a smartphone there is a much wider choice of apps with features that you may want.

A reviewer of the NW-A45 (granted, a different model) wrote: "If there is one thing that annoys me it is that it takes a couple of minutes from being powered up before it is usable, as it indexes the music on the micro SD card every time."

Well I just tried it and had the same result as yesterday. Powered up in a couple of seconds and was back at exactly the same place I left it. The track I am using is a two hour radio programme so should be equivalent to a podcast.

I can't answer about Gapless playback as I'm not even sure what you mean.

I will be interested to hear berlins84er answer to CDV's question having just realised I have three MP3 players (Sony NW-A45, NW-A105 and Ipod touch 64GB) that each cost more than any phone I have owned. I am looking forward to seeing if any Android manufacturer takes on the iPhone 12 mini. Stick in a decent sized memory card and I could see the appeal.

Since you guys are new you might like to see the thread I started on some of the players http://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/sony-network-walkman-personal-stereos.5800/

It is what it says: the ability to play files without gaps like CD or cassette. Invaluable for classical as well as for "continuous" albums like The Wall or Music For the Masses. Harder to achieve and more rare with MP3 than with FLAC.

Suppose you want to listen to this playlist off YouTube. There will be annoying pauses between tracks.

Spotify is better, it has settings for gapless and crossfade, but they do not always work as seamlessly as listening off a CD or cassette.
