Looks nice, but how do they actually sound? In the olden days the Gold Standard were Stax headphones (I still hope that one day I will be able to get me one of those!) but in our sad present-day reality we have Sennheisers HD-600/650 as a "Gold Standard", then closed-back Beyerdynamics with about the same sonic signature, and my favorites, totally tuned-up for my personal sonic orgasms (but not audiophile correctness!) Audio Technica ATH-W500 woodies. Right now I am totally out of this game because of a pressing headache to rebuild my burned home,... BUT we have Audeze, Hi-Fi Man newcomers with some headphones listed at over $3k!!! Anybody????????????????????????
I'm not much of a headphone guy, I wear them all day on my heavy-labor job so getting them off is really nice. Even so I do love to pick up 70's vintage headphones when I see them, they really put a lot of love in some of these and since AKAI was a very popular reel to reel company I have to believe they put a strong effort in their headphones, but they are super rare around here, I've never seen any, I tend to run into Pioneers the most and a lot of Koss Pros-4A's. Jorge, I did score some Stax a few years ago in the middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin, unfortunately they didn't have the amp and I haven't made an effort to get one yet.
Over here where I grew up they just cranked it up, sometimes to the dismay of the neighbors. I remember back in 78 when Running With The Devil came out, the fraternaty across the street must have had a monster system because you could hear it two blocks away. I didn't know any headphone listeners until the Walkman came out.
Hi all. By searching through the web I found this thread about Akai headphones. I would like to ask if any user in this forum knows (or has a catalogue) of which Akai models where produced in the period ranging from 1968-1972. I wanted to have a unit of this era in my collection but can't find any information elsewhere. Thank you!
This website used to have a ton of information but I'm having a hard time pulling it up. http://20cheaddatebase.web.fc2.com/ You may need to use Google Translate or Archive.org to bring the old pages up.
Very interesting. Had a look at it and could find the 1970 list. However there's no 1968, 69, 71 and 72 list there so I guess I'll have to keep searching. But I wasn't aware of that archive so thank you for the tip!
You might find ads in old Tape Magazines on www.WorldRadioHistory.com https://worldradiohistory.com/Tape-Recording-UK.htm I had a reel-to-reel that was older than the M8 pictured, all tubes, built in amp, very robust construction but I could never find any information on it. This guy has a ton of brochures but no early ones. https://www.hifi-archiv.info/
