So here are a few pictures of my "vivid red" Sony WM-22, no NR systems, or fancy stuff that isn't basic tape transport and a tape type selector! It does have a nice sound though, thanks to the capstan pulley being made out of brass and not plastic. Here is the front face of it : The strap was added by me, as I didn't get the original strap when i bought this on eBay earlier this year. The different controls it has : And the back side, with the battery cover that is not missing! (it is taped on though ) : You can see with the lighting the cheap plastic this player is made out of ! Hope you all like it.
It is a great model and I think the red version is probably my favourite. Although, like you said, it's quite easy to see through the plastic. I agree with you about the sound, when I got my first WM-22 I was pleasantly surprised with how good it sounded considering it's a budget model.
It did come with a shoulder strap brand new, but I'd say about half of them for sale on eBay do not have it anymore (same thing with the battery cover!), so as a precaution I just added this simple wrist guard.
One of the best looking Walkmans ever. I have a black WM25 here but it doesn't look anything like as attractive as the Red WM22
I have one identical I found as NOS. I love it, it is really nice looking. Do FFW and REW works ? The WM-22 has a clutch which with age tends to fall apart. It can be fixed though with a bit of glue.
They indeed do! My unit is fully functional, but was not NOS when i got it. It may need some lubrication for the Play button slider but that's not really needed at this moment.
The mechanics of the WM-22 is curious: it is very simple (very few gears) but has brass fly-wheel and counter-rotating fly-wheel ! The motor is rather strong and the belt is thick: as a consequence Sony had to add a clutch also for FFW/REW otherwise the torque on the reel would have broken the tape. I do not have the specs for the torque on the reels in the WM-22 but I think it is close to that of a proper tapedeck. On the other hand, the electronics is not very refined and the motor is simply DC controlled with no feedback (as in TSP-L2, WM-2, WM-3, ...) but EQ is rather accurate and tapes with no dolby play pretty good.
Here are the torque specs from the service manual. Could you maybe compare them to proper tapedecks ?
Anything other than black, gray, or silver, is non-existent over here. I don't care how cheap it is, that thing is cool!
