In fact my collection is posing some risk due to moist environment as I'm living in a high humidity country. Fungus and mold is thriving some of my Walkman. Regular cleaning is highly essential for me to sustain the condition. Take a look at my Panasonic unit how bad it has been invaded by fungus.
I need a permanent solution to this teething problem. Anyone could shed some lights will be highly appreciated.
Wow that's not good. Don't have that issue here in the uk so no clue what you should do but I imagine it's really not good for your stuff!
Imagine these Walkman could last more than 30 years in the mediterranean countries, the life span accelerates just in couple of years in my home climate. That's why I have to constantly exercise these units rather than let them sit idling for long period of time that's when humidity settled in. I have to get some active carbon to control the moisture build up.
A sealed bag or box with a dessicant satchet ? They often come with things you buy or available from the likes of Amazon at work we actually put them inside the sealed equipment we sell They can be recharged by heating them up http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/what-is-the-best-way-to-recharge-reactive-silica-gel_topic11246.html
Thanks. Will get these sillica gel and place them around the shelf. Seal bag may not be an option as I will keep them display at all time. Very helpful of you indeed, thank you.
As the UK is also a high humidity (but usually cold) country you can buy lots of things like this. http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/diy/plumbing/moisture-absorbers However, we ended up buying one of these https://www.meacodehumidifiers.co.uk/dehumidifiers/home-dehumidifiers/meaco-10l-dehumidifier on a bad day it will fill the 10l tank in a day which shows how much moisture is in the air !
The humidifier sure is an effective solution and a good option if it runs low on electrical consumption.
Yep a dehumidifier is the way to go and silica gels are good too. In Melbourne Australia we get all kinds of weather so I keep my collection in zip lock bags with some silica gel in the container.
what seriously helps as well is a linnen- or cotton- bag full off rice mixed with sea-salt (big grains) in the bottom of the box(es) that you use for storage. much cheaper than the silica-gel issue... if you don't know how to get the right size bags you can also use tennis-socks, they take +/- 1/2 a kilo of salt/rice, nicer is to have little linnen-bags made by auntie, mom or granny this dryes out a lot and keeps it dry, have a moisture-responding paper-strip (in germany they're called "Lackmus", don't know the english name) to control the effect - that's how f.ex. cigar- collectors dry out finds wich are to humid...
Lackmus-paper you get f.ex. here: http://www.ebay.de/itm/like/252492439314?lpid=106&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true
Another option is a glass display cabinet from Ikea etc and then the silica sachet packs hidden behind each unit. UV is also a great fungus killer
I think that is the best suggestion so far. I'm not sure about the idea of using salt. When reading up on rotted speaker surrounds someone claimed that if you live near the sea (as I do) the sea air will cause them to rot more quickly.
Whilst your here Ken... do you think you may be able to redo your old WM-7 belt change thread from the old forum?
I could grab this idea and fabricate it using this concept. This will be more cost effective and practical. Thanks Doublecee.
I will definitely, let me take some new shots and repost them shortly. It's my pleasure and thanks for the request
one of my walkman that bought from overseas shows patchy discoloration similar to your walkmans What is the solution to remove those patches? Did you use special cleaner? any suggestion?
