in the past week my community had they're spring clean up, and i came across this SK-900 pioneer, serial number 81-00108. at first i was just like ha that's cool ill take it and i brought it home and had it plugged in and the thing works pretty decent and has good sound, but tonight on a whim i googled the model number and seen a bunch of crazy numbers and prices and started looking into this thing. I'm thinking i'm probably going to sell it, if any collector between Newfoundland and Toronto are reading and interested i'm going to be going up in a month or so for a trip and am planning on taking it up to find someone to appraise it, figured id turn to some internet forums first tho. ill put some pics in this post and am apologizing for the quality i'm not sure what happened. thanks a bunch, and if anyone wants to inquire personally send me a email @ jasonslade99@gmail.com
Just a heads up for you...we get this a lot, people who aren’t collectors wanting us to tell them what their boombox is worth. As we’re the people likely to buy such a thing we’re the wrong people to ask. Just look on eBay at completed sales and you’ll see what it’s worth. Then stick it on eBay. Unless you’re offering it to us for a few dollars out of kindness?
I’ve looked on eBay and can’t find much, was in contact with a guy in Michigan that sold one in the past couple months for 1100 us, I’m not really looking to get the crazy money, my idea was throw it on eBay auction start it at 500, if someone wanted to throw a decent offer on it I would probably take it. Other reason for coming here first was to see if any Canadian collector was interested in it that I could meet with and do it in person so I wouldn’t have to deal with shipping. Thanks for the reply
That is an amazing find. I wonder why people don't take such things to Goodwill. I have just looked through Ebay and can't find a single completed listing worldwide You can more or less ignore the price of the Russian listing active at the moment. They seem to have a very over-inflated view of the price of things, as do many ebayer's who list things buy it now. There are two on Buyee.jp. Both auctions. One starting at £43 and another at £430. Does anyone know how to look at completed prices on Buyee ? I actually had an SK-900 with a non working cassette, but sold it back eleven years ago when I moved house. I only ended up with about £60 for it after the buyer complained the condition. In todays market you should do much better than that.
I just read the other replies that came in while I was typing. As a regular Ebay seller (four parcels to post this morning) a couple of tips. Offer to post items no matter how expensive. Otherwise you are eliminating a large percentage of potential buyers. Then pack it twice as well as you think is necessary, double boxing etc. Take lots of photos, especially of any scratches etc, and explain that the unit is sold as seen (see my comment above). If you have never sold on Ebay try to find a friend who has. People are far more likely to bid if someone has a bit of feedback, compared to none at all.
Great find Jason Slade and thanks for sharing and offering it for sale here. While extremely rare over here there's usually 2-3 for sale on yahoo.jp. Yahoo is very big in Japan and their auction site dwarfs all the others, including Ebay. It loooks like the last four went for right around $400.00 USD and then you have to add shipping to where ever. Personal sales can be difficult through this website, over the years we've seen both big sellers and new members scam the buyer so members are hesitant to jump on some of these sales. It looks like great condition and I love Pioneer Boomboxes, I might have to think about it.
Congratulations on a great find!!! I second the advice above; get someone with great eBay feedback to list it for you and offer shipping at around $80 USD, and you'll have it covered. Be sure to double wrap the box; there are videos online on how to do so. Shipping is a pain, but you will sell it for a lot more because you will be open to more bidders. I also recommend dusting it and lightly and posting a video of it working to increase the price you get for it. Otherwise, your idea for a local sale is a good one, but it is a large amount of cash for an in-person transaction. Best of luck and keep us posted!
This is truly a beautiful box.having seen one in the flesh and heard one I think they are awesome.but.after re acquiring some boxes recently i am shocked beyond words at how much these radios are selling for now.virtually insane prices.i dont think I'll be getting vast numbers like I used to do as I just cant afford them no more !
Prices are all over the place Pontyboombox but if you keep your eyes open there's bargains. A lot of sellers go to Ebay and see AIWA TPR-XXX is listed for $$$$$ and think they have a goldmine but very few boomers sell for big bucks, just check the completed sales history. Every once in a while a special or rare high end box will sell for big money, the big collectors know how rare some of these models are and need those last grails to complete their collection. I posted the world's biggest collector thread, the guys house was floor to wall boxes, he ended up liquidating it all for dirt cheap at the end.
It's out there but you have to spend the time searching, 80% of the equipment I've got has been from garage sales, flea markets and asking around. A friend of mine dropped this model off at my house, in the middle of the night, at the door. He saw it in a trunk, the guy didn't know what to do with it and my buddy had seen some of my equipment. On his way home, he dropped it off. Mine's a little more roached out but it works nicely and may clean up ok. I've picked up several units over the end of this summer, it's clean-out time....
