Hi Everyone, First off, I can't believe it's been about 6 months since I posted here. A lot has happened since then.... not in this hobby though. I rarely find any good audio equipment/boomboxes at Goodwill/thrift shops anymore. Sad... Anyways, Got something kinda interesting last week at Goodwill, first box in a LONG time: Sony CFD-260 manufacture date of December '92. All working (finally) and really nice shape. Paid $10 at GW. Now I'd HEARD of Sony's tray loading CD boomboxes of the early 90s, but I'd never seen one in the flesh until now. Two decks (piano keys), auto reverse, tray CD, nice display, and digital tuning. Originally HAD a remote. Probably would have been on the lower to mid range tier back in 1992/1993. I both love and hate this box. First, I love how unique it is. It's designed to look kinda modular, which is really quite cool. Also, the Display is really nice. I love that it has an auto reverse deck, and the fact it can take an IR remote. Headphone jack is also nice to have especially in it's convenient location. Feels premium to use.... EXCEPT for the tape part... Oki, so the tape mechs are soooooo cheap. Not good at all to listen to or work on. The sound is rather lousy even though it boasts MEGA BASS and 5 sound modes. The 5 sound modes are completely useless (duh), and the MEGA BASS is baked in to two of the 5 sound modes. CD player portion had those surface mount caps that all early 90s Sony stuff has and of course, they were bad. Ended up spending days troubleshooting bad vias in order to fix. Speakers are small and puny. Bottom line, it's an interesting box, but not one I'd want to spend much time listening too. It's interesting because you don't normally see the tray loader Sonys around. Would love to hear opinions/experience on it....
For $10 it is a no brainer. But then I read that you had to take it apart and replace some parts here and there. Videos or photos of the repair would be priceless.
Yeah, I should take some videos/photos of the work I've done. I'm not great at documenting these type of repairs because I usually only have time for just doing them at this point. Most of the time, these 90s boxes are super cheap to buy at thrift stores, and they quickly turn into a time sucker. With that said, It's really quite nice for what it is.
I nearly bought one of these a few months ago for way more than $10, im glad i didn't buy it now, thanks for the review dude
There is one on eBay in apparently good working and cosmetic condition, and includes the user's manual and wireless remote. I was tempted to buy it until reading this review. Very helpful. Thanks, Recaptcha.
