    Afternoon everyone,

    I managed to drop my Walkman and one of the sprockets has come loose / fallen off with no apparent way to reconnect. Was just hoping some kind person might be able to point me in the right direction in terms of a fix.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Matt

    It is a press fit, you just need to press the reels back onto their shafts. It might be necessary to open the unit in order to counterhold the gear below.

    However, there are 2 things that are recommended to do before you put those reels back toghether:

    1. lubricate the shafts of the gears with oil; you can take the gear that drive the reel and lubricate it that way or put the oil from above;
    2. the ends of the spring also need lubrication: it can be oil or grease, either one will work in this place; it is needed because the springs rotate when the units is working, creating additional friction;

    P.S.: the pinch rollers look like they need a good clean, as they're full of oxide. Should be completely black (not brown) when clean.

    Hi Valentin,

    Thank you for the advice, it is very much appreciated. I don't suppose you would know whether I would need to de-solder anything in order to remove the processor before I open it up?

    Thanks again and appreciate the recommendations re oil and clean!

    There are a couple of solder joints that need to be desoldered in order to remove the PCB (as there are in all WM-EX series). I marked what's obvious in a picture I have found online, but there may be more on the left side that are not visible in this picture.
    However, it may not be necessary to remove the board in order to put the reel back.

    Thanks Valentin. I've opened it up and it would appear that the PCB would need removing in order to put the reel back unfortunately. Looks like I'll be learning how to solder!

    Be careful as there is a risk of damaging the PCB if too much heat is applied. The 2 switches on the top (marked TAPE and ATS) are plastic and can melt from too much heat as well.

    The head flex connector and the battery terminals do not need to be desoldered, however care must be taken with the head flex cable as it can tear.

    My recommendation is to buy a good solder wick in order to desolder all those points. Good luck !
