OO great topic, can't wait to see some of the replies, its always nice to see what people are holding out for.

I have 3 personal grails:

1. The Phillips Moving Sound 8080 "Picnic box", I know, I know, but I can't resist, when I saw it I just wanted one.

2. A descent Sharp GF9494, I have seen some in my range but they have been poor condition.

3. My absolute grail, my dream, The Sanyo MR-X920, I have a video bookmarked on YouTub and I watch it 3-4 times a day!

Ha ha my personal grail is the 920, as soon as I saw one I was smitten...I don't need to post a pic as yep that one above is mine all mine lol

My mini grail was another Sanyo, the 7900, probably cos it looks just like the 920!

john82 - 2014-02-02 11:55

seb968 - 2014-02-02 13:10

Great thread John. My person grails are Sansui CP -7,  (love these) Sharp GF-5454 (my first stereo!) JVC M-70, and the Sharp GF-9191  These are all machines that conjure up a great deal of nostagia for me.

back.row - 2014-02-02 13:14

My personal grail?
I've always wanted to build one myself. When I 12 I wired up a cheap Rat Shack under dash cassette deck (car) to two 6V lantern batteries and two full range 8" speakers in a book bag. It worked ok, but it was a serious battery hog.
I'd very much like to give it another shot, and may do just that. The problem would be finding all of the parts. The biggest problem is that full range 8" drivers would be hard to find in this day and age, or any full range speakers for that matter, and car radio speakers are too heavy and usually inefficient. I have run into a source of full rage 10W 6x9 speakers, though.
This time around I'm not going for car radio stuff, though. They draw too much current to be run on a batery supply that doesn't weigh a ton. I'd ether build my own amp circuit (or perhaps a kit board as the parts are less expensive that way) or get one of those new prefab-in-a-box 12V amps.
Probably not what you're after on here, but I do think I could put something together that's a bit more powerful and better on the batteries than one from the past.
As far as a real one goes? I've never seen one in person, but GE made this 3 piece thing called a "Superadio Series" that I'd love to get my hands on.
I do have one of these, and it's the only one that got burnt up that I've replaced..

And I like it a lot as it really pulls in the stations..I love a radio that's made for DX.
But this other one has a lot more bells and whistles includingina five band EQ swing style VU meters, record level controls, Dolby (that I never use anyway), and frankly over all just looks like a better box.
Unfortuataly I can't seem to even find a picture of it, so I'm thinking it must be quite rare.

those are the boxes i grew up with  apart from the rx cd 100 so i couldn't choose one john haha...i know some would expect me to say the m90 which i dearly love but i never grew up with one....never had the 55 come to think of it but always wanted one....spent many many hours drooling over pics of those

back.row - 2014-02-02 13:23

Oh, and, not to keep writing on and on, but I'd also love to find one of these:

Yes, in all fairness it's dime-store junk, but it was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.

soundboy - 2014-02-02 13:48

B.R that is fare unit what make is it ?

It's an Electro Brand..an inexpensive brand often found at dime stores years ago.
Amzingly enough it sold for $25 new in the early to mid '80s, or there was a cheaper version without the cassette for $20. Amazing for that price for sure. There was a stereo version I had not too long ago, but odd as it may seem the little mono one sounds a lot better.
It was sold under a ton of different brand names and in different cases with and without the tape deck. Even Rat Shack sold it at one point in time (SW-100) for about $100 no less, and that's without the tape deck.

back.row - 2014-02-02 15:08

Found it...

brutus442 - 2014-02-02 16:36

Simple question..and one with two answers for me.

A PIONEER SK-95  or 71

I would sell my wife for one of these in minty condition. Who am I kidding, I'd include her free with the deal. I can't find a decent one to save my life! Most need extensive work and are apparently a b!tch to work on.

Oh Gods Of Boomboxes....hear my plea......

jt.techno - 2014-07-31 05:06

My personal grail is my beloved Toshiba RT-S782.

I hardly see it mentioned on this forum but it is a top performer in my experience - a gem that often goes under people's radars - I would recommend to snap these up when they wander across your radar - you shouldn't be disappointed.

It is my PG due to fact it was the box I got BITD - I grew up with this box, listening to pirate radio stations around Croydon in UK such as JFM, LWR, Solar and Horizon (for those that will get goosebumps at hearing these station names ), hooking it up to my other HiFi gear I collected at the time, creating many many mix tapes and basically sharing great Soul, Funk, Electro, Dance and House music with my mates

The pics are of my second one of these that I bought on eBay a couple of years ago. My first lasted for many many years before somebody I shared a house with decided to up and leave with it and I never saw them or the box again

But at last I got one back again and can experience once more what a great box this is

I recently briefly played some music back to back on my Crown CSC-850 and then this Tosh and, for it's size, the Tosh packs a not too dissimilar deep bass punch and rumble with great clarity throughout - my reference track at the time being the LL classic Rock the Bells ... a great bassline to test the woofers out

Don't be fooled by the lack of treble and bass - the tone control is very effective and there is a secret weapon in the form of the ESBS (Expand Super Bass Sound) that does pretty much as you would hope and gives a great overall tone and bass punch.

The other thing about this Tosh is that it happily goes full volume without distortion - Tosh definitely knew how to make these things. Plus it exudes a quality weight and feel to it overall.

All this coupled with manual or auto record level, Dobly NR, Norm/CrO2/Metal selection, 4 wavebands with fine tuning, a TA/TB "line-in" function (need DIN convertor cable but works very well), soft touch controls with 1 track music search, the tape the right way up, the handle in the middle (Reno), etc. ... anyway, can you tell it's my personal grail yet and that I'm a bit biased

Enough of my waffling - just don't pass one of these by when you see one next - give it a road test - you may be pleasantly surprised

Toshiba RT-S782 Full Front

Toshiba RT-S782 Full Rear

Toshiba RT-S782 Front Controls

Toshiba RT-S782 Door Close Up
