superscope 320 ..worth saving ?

retr0basshead - 2014-08-08 11:33

I got this superscope with tatty box strap and manual, but not working.it powers up makes buzzing noise and the vu's bounce back and forth !

Is it worth saving ? Any ideas of the fault ?

Superscope CD-320? IMHO not. If you want something good better get a Sony TC-D5.

Disagree, a very capable budget recorder.

Maybe when working. But I don't think switch cleaner will solve the buzzing and VU flipping. Not worth imo. When looking for a similar device I would go for the D5. It has many advantages besides good sound. They go really cheap too sometimes.

Hmmm maybe it will just be a shelf filler then ! Shame, the controls have a qaulity feel to them, and it looks and feels well built.i guess the years have just caught up with it.

Hi these superscopes suffer, like many other cassette machines, from a dirty record play switch. Flooding it with switch cleaner cured mine. Once fixed it has as A.O. says proved too be a capable budget recorder. It is well worth a try.

Cheers seb ,i will give the switch cleaner a try .its worth a try .

The superscope ive seen made by marantz ! Is this correct ? As mine has nothing to confirm this, not on the unit ,box or manual !

andyboombox - 2014-08-09 02:28

superscope are very well known for making quality items-the build quality is right up there with the likes of sony etc.and to me matey its not to be condemned until the fat lady singsid keep it as is.even if you dont get it working right

retr0basshead - 2014-08-09 03:00

I will try a bit of switch cleaner as seb suggested, but if that dont work ...it can sit on a shelf looking cool.

Andy ,there are'nt any fat ladies singing round here ! So its going nowhere

Superscope were a third party company that in the early 70's badged up and promoted Sony equipment. By the late 70's they had changed their alliance to Marantz. Your CD-320 is an early 80's American built Marantz product. I have the CD-330; very similar to yours but with three heads. They are nice machines. I hope the switch cleaner cures yours because once working you will enjoy it. From the symptoms you describe it sounds highly likely that it is the record play switch. These can cause all manner of issues when they are dirty; buzzing and flicking VU meters being typical! Good luck!

Great knowledge,thanks seb and andy

these recording units are great, they make an exellent side line of collecting, alongside conventional boomboxes-ive got a bog standard sanyo one in the case from about 1976,but could easily get into these too

seb968 - 2014-08-09 03:28

I quite agree Andy!

She looks great, very nice condition!

c'mon bro, this is a little gem - professional or not, keep this little 80'ies time-capsule !

don't bother to fix it because you probably have other tape-gears to use, but if - just replace belt(s) and turn the motor by hand a little bit, you'll be surprised how cool it'll work !

b.t.w. i do own units like that and will keep'em - iff you wanna sell'em they won't save your life, other alternative is to throw'em in the bin - but if they're gone - they're gone and don't give you any pleaasure anymore, just watching'em...
