Hi my name is Ian. I've always been into Walkmans/personal stereos since I got my first one in 1981. I've had many different ones over the years. Some I kept in pristine condition, some weren't so lucky . Never quite had the money for expensive Sony ones, so had to make do with the cheeper end of the market! Actually, I have a soft spot for all those crappy cheep old personal stereos that most people had back in the day. Some of them dont sound too bad if you just stick a pair of decent headphones in them! I have also just started to do a repair or two, with varying degrees of success. I absolutely BUTCHERED a poor little Sanyo I got off ebay! That bugger did not want to come apart! Anyway, nice to meet you all, and here are some pictures! You have some very appealing units there Ian. I like the little Sony Clock Radio with the tape in the back. I have never seen one of those before. The Blue Sanyo MGP600D in the advert was the second personal stereo I had. I bought it as a faulty customer return for a few pounds back in the 1980s. Fixing it was super quick. I took the back off and a piece of adhesive metal screening had slipped sideways from the PCB and was stuck on a pulley stopping it from turning. I still have it but I think it needs new belts. I have seen the same unit on Ebay in pink.
Love the phone card one! Those cards had all sorts of images on them, like postage stamps... probably someone has a huge collection somewhere. The phonebox used to burn a mark onto the face, and each mark was 10p worth of calls which was 1 minute of call time.
You mean like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRITISH-...424138?hash=item2f0e1fbdca:g:ZoEAAOSwKkhZqG0j The only one I ever had was from this series. Looking through Ebay most of them seem to be advertising for insurance companies etc. Showing how much things have changed Telecoms wise, in 1996 Membury motorway services used to have about 16 call phones outside in a couple of circular shelters. A few years ago most of the phones disappeared and now the shelters have gone as well.
I think the problem for motorway stations is the rent is ridiculously high, because they are all on enormous price leasehold from the government (which explains the food prices too!). I was at one of them on the M4 last week and it had five Costa Coffees in the eastbound area and 4 in the west! Can’t imagine phoneboxes bring much rent in seem to remember having a load of Christmas phonecards too.
Thanks Longman, glad you liked the pics! Let me know if ever you change the belts on your Sanyo. Need to know if it would be easy to do for a total novice!
