I bet those tapes sound good, but... what about the headphones? I wouldn't expect so much from such old ones...

    Enjoyment both visually and sonically.

I was listening to this tape this morning while I was working.
I chose the Marantz to avoid wear on my best deck's head

    One photo for two threads.

Listening to Laura Branigan "Hold Me" cassette on my JVC mini system.

The album has some interesting cover versions including "Forever Young".
Such a shame that it came true for her.

that's what i'm listening to right now:

Cassette "the Residents" - Buckaroo Blues / Black Berry

i'm so glad i found this rare crap, never been released on any other media, recorded from a tv-live-performance in 1986

after that, Residents never became the same again...

Love the Sony PS-Q3. A bigger analogue precursor of Sony D88 Discman I feel?

Spent all day sorting out stuff at my childhood home.

Now listening to an OMD tape (Crush) of my sisters on my late Mothers completely mint Sony CFS210L.

Unlike the Sanyo CD Radio cassette I tried first the Sony is working perfectly and has done since the day it was bought. A tribute to their engineering.

***SORRY, FOLKS: NO PHOTOS HERE, BUT DO READ ON***

After some reluctance, tonight I started listening to this apparently home-dubbed Maxell UR-90 audiocassette. My dad must have home-recorded these, perhaps in the late 1990s. At least, I think that he dubbed the songs; his handwriting's on the Sony HF-60 J-card accompanying the Maxell in the cassette case. (God rest his soul.)

This is the same tape that I wished to listen to in late October, only to be upset by the discovery of a seemingly "dead" Helix HX-4633N, the same boombox that I was to play the cassette with.

Anyway, weeks after solving the problem (somewhat), I have stayed awake to play the audiotape, with the same boombox.

    * First up: "The Time Is Right" by the late Barry White on his 1994 album The Icon Is Love, that we have (or had) on CD, with this recording likely being from that disc.

    * On that dubbing's heels is "Runaway" by Janet Jackson, a 1995 single that appeared on her first compilation, Design Of A Decade (1986 - 1996). (I remembered the tune as I listened to it and correctly guessed it was a Janet Jackson jam but had to trial-and-error the title online with lyrics that I heard -- all while I stopwatch-timed the playing songs.)

    * Then came "100% Pure Love," likely the best-known song by Crystal Waters, a May 1994 release of hers, according to Wikipedia, though I somehow seem to remember hearing it at parties and fundraisers a year or so before.

    * Next was another jam that I remember hearing several times but never learned the title of or the performing musicians until tonight: "Every Day Of The Week" by Jade from their 1994 album Mind, Body & Song. (Yep, more trial-and-error Googling.)

    * Then one hears "In The Summertime." Wikipedia informs one that it is a cut released in 1995 by Jamaican-American musician Shaggy from his third studio album Boombastic and that Shaggy's version is a remake of the same-title 1970 original by the British rock band Mongo Jerry.

    * Last song listened to thus far on side A is "Get On The Floor" (a well-known uptempo jam from the late Michael Jackson's landmark 1979 album Off The Wall).

Love the looks of that Marantz! It is escaping me all the time to get one myself. How does it perform?

Well, the Marantz sounds pretty well. I still remember how impressed I was when I got it. Recording from spotify through my Creative X-Fi sound card end up in excellent recordings... that sound even better than through the sound card!
But the truth is that the TC-D5 sounds a bit better, but it's much more limited in features. The PMD-430's headphone output sounds bad but with an portable amp through the line out sounds very very well.

Yes, that's the D5. Actually this one is the D5M which is slightly different than the D5ProII. The former has line IN and the latter, XLR balanced inputs. If you want one of these, I'd recommend the D5M.
However, to help learning to do good records, the Marantz is way better, as it's a 3-head with variable bias, pitch and even dbx.
