hmmm, i was looking for something completely different in some drawers, i forgot what it was, apparently found some units of the - what i call - "flimsy-battery-clip-on-era". they seem to be all around 1983-1986 (?) and i think this thing started with the Sony WM-100 (...correct me if wrong !), they had i think first this bloody little battery-thing: easily falling off, often broken, very often missing and mostly an eager - but for whatever reason often copied in this era - the following pics do show only a few units of that type by different brands - only the compartment of the Sanyo JJ fits it's relative Kenwood (also a not shown Grundig), otherwise NONE are interchangable - not even within the same make (!) why ? so that you had to buy a new unit because the batterybox didn't clip on ? i don't have to remind you, that those units weren't cheap, all off'em were quite expensive, so they couldn't expect the cosumers to buy a new unit whenever the batterything collapsed - i also remember that i used to own a WM-101 back in 1985 were that thing broke and it was a hazzle to buy replacement - why didn't the other brands learn from Sony's silly construction ? any explanation ? (...please excuse that some of those units do require a bit of attention !)
Well seen Autoreverser. This battery case could be the very beginning of something that makers love: the programmed obsolescence. I hate what SONY did to all their models so the battery could not be swapped between models... PS: Some models of your collection do need a looooot of love, dude ;-D. Please take care of that poor PX101!
aiwa were just as bad and panasonic, i hate the clip on battery crap, something else i hate are rechargeable batteries
Those Aiwas need some tlc. And a capacitor change pronto! I'd happily clean them, but you would have a hard time getting them back >: D
I kind of remember when Sony introduced the gumstick battery, it was supposed to be a revolution similar to other Sony Products. At the time they were thinking that the one battery would power all of the personal electronics line. While it never really took off for them, look at hand power tools today; every major brand has a rechargeable battery that will power an assortment of tools, following what Sony had intended.
At least Gumsticks were used by several manufacturers. While I know what you mean about Power Tool ranges like Ryobi One, every manufacturer seems to use their own standard, and change it every couple of years as described in this article https://discuss.toolguyd.com/t/battery-cross-compatibility/27/4 I bought a Hitachi Li-ion Cordless drill and about a year later they changed their batteries from a push-in to slide-on type. At least you can get replacement batteries for most power tools, although after a few years it probably makes more sense to buy a completely new tool due to the batterie(s) being a significant part of the price. In contrast D Cells date back to 1898 and are still readily available !
well, gumsticks were a good improvement as they did work very well, don't forget they did last far into the MD-era, just with spreadout of mp3's there was no more commercial need...
