Now the big question is: will it be worth by its recording quality? (the cassette, not the original master of course)

Yes. The big question. But you get the digital download and it's really a marketing ploy. Nice art work and you can always make your own on a premium type 4 cassette. Wouldn't be the first time I've done that.

Yes, that's it. I prefer to buy the digital download of an album and then do a good recording...

Except that the source is digital. My preference is to record from a new vinyl source to retain the maximum analogue characteristics. Modern studio recording now is on a digital desk anyway so does it matter. The masters used for new vinyl records are most likely cut from a digital source.

I purchased the latest Rick Astley album on tape. I'm not really a Rick Astley fan but i thought i'd show support for them bringing it out on tape. Shame though as the quality of the tape and recording was terrible! still, hopefully if more people support the tape format the quality will get better.

I know. It's rare to find a good pre recorded tape. Unfortunately they're all bulk loaded and high speed duplicated which for us means they don't do the medium any justice. It's why people laugh when you say you have a Walkman because all they recall is hissy tapes from the 1980's. Totally different when recorded on a quality type IV on a Walkman WM-D6C or a high end deck.
I recently bought a batch of E46 cassette tapes to replace the rubbish in my Santana album collection. Now I have the artwork and a high quality recording for our beloved Walkman and Aiwa devices.

and quite possibly much older records. A few nights ago I was watching Top of the Pops - The Story of 1986 and someone on it (probably the keyboard player from the Communards) claimed that they had the first hit single recorded entirely digitally that year.

For sure. Dire Straits released the first digital album in 1986. When you look at the back of that CD it contains the letters "DDD". All three stages, studio desk, master source and consumer's media are digital.
Of course we prefer DDDA for our Walkman!

Congrats Paul, it looks like the album is #1. Maybe we'll see a photo of him with a Walkman or boombox playing the tape.....

Thank you Brian for this music recommendation.

Perhaps if you employed a quality vacuum-tube pre-amp between the computer and the tape machine, to soften the edges, you could obtain qualities you seek from vinyl... I imagine.

    What album was it?

Well it depends a bit on definition. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA is credited as the first commercial release on CD in 1984.

@Silverera thanks for the tip: for some reason I always "knew" that it was Avalon, but never checked my info. Got myself into CDs years later, only in 1989 or so.
Not a biggest Sir Paul fan, but after reading this will fire up my Tidal tomorrow!

    Hi Jorge,
I hope to obtain the official cassette this week. I did get the CD and recorded another copy on a type IV cassette. It came up well. Also never been a big McCartney fan either but I guess there is a fair amount of nostalgia involved here. Having admitted to that I will say this album stacks up pretty well. The more you listen the more you like it and marvel at the talent that was also evident in those "fab" times. If only John was still with us!
    Cheers

May I suggest George Harrison's "Cloud 9" album? I let an older friend--a big fan of John--listen to it and she said "It sounds so-much like a true Beatles album, it's like as if they all got back together again!"

Yes, the source is digital, and so is the vinyl source. I agree that the vinyl is a better source if available. the reason is that there is less dynamic range compression applied to it, therefore it sounds more natural. The problem is new vinyl releases are very expensive, and unless a big percentage of the songs are really worth I prefer to save a bit and go for the download, thought it's not what I would like to do.

BTW: None of the links work; can you check them?

I was doubting to buy the tape but went for the download; now you're confirming me that I did chose right. Shame that the quality of those new releases is so bad...

Passing through a vacuum tube amp is a good idea, but difficult to do if you use a digital source, just because there are very few vacuum tube preamps. Almost all them are vinyl preamps, or vacuum amps. I use a vacuum headphone amp that does the same but keeps the recording on cassette as-is.

@walkman archive: does it Not have a line-out? my Woo Audio 3 had it, maybe it is an "option" with your h/p amp?

Sorry to report that although this latest from Sir Paul is Way Above whatever we are being fed nowadays, going back in time to his Band On the Run days, his voice now does Not grasp me no more: it is very good but I am not going to buy LP for boombox replay-recording onto cassette, hi-fi Tidal will suffice...

@nickelindimer yours is a good off-topic advice: for the old fart like me who lived through the whole craze, George was my all-time fav of the Glorious Four: B-side of the Abbey Road was/still getting played ad-infinitum and all his solo efforts are placed right next to my fav LPs of Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Gong, Klaus Schulze, Steven Wilson....... and King Crimson! Old age does change your prefs, and I spend more time nowadays trying to understand Mahler than listening to Mariah Carrey or Lady Gaga, or trying to suffer thru Top 30... but George still sounds like a Real Thing to me, as crazy and innovative as Xenakis or Ligetti... Now I sound like Alex Ross in his bestseller The Rest Is Noise: totally off, sorry!!! But you just Must read his book, it reads like a drug and digs into you!! ;)
