Hey guys, I'm hoping you can assist me in finding one of the dat or dcc portable players. I always thought the digital cassettes were kind of near yet most of the players I've seen on ebay are 300$ and above. So if anyone has one for cheap they might light to spare let me know!

I've looked at some DAT on Ebay and they were around $100.00 or a little more, personally I don't have a portable unit but I'd love to have one and my buddy promises me one after he transfers all his old radio interviews. DCC on the other hand seems to be very rare, we had a full size player at work years ago but that's the only one I've seen up close.

I'd be proactive and call the local radio and tv stations and see if they have any they want to get rid of, this was the target market for this equipment and you might be lucky, or real lucky since they might have multiple units. A lot of these places want to get rid of this stuff but can't throw it out with the trash so it sits on the shelf forever, when your at it ask about Marantz PMD Tape Decks and maybe Sony D6's, these were also staples at the stations.

Good luck and post if you get anything.

They've really gone up in price over the last few months, just like everything else discussed on this board. I should have grabbed one when they were more reasonable. The good news is we're heading into boombox season, people are usually buying holiday gifts and not electronics, I've found some of my best stuff in November and December. Keep an eye on Craigslist, that's usually where the surplus equipment ends.

Hm hopefully, though most likely as always there's no form of real audio equipment of value on craigslist where I live. Even though the info is usually it probably won't make the process of finding one around here any less time consuming, would be great if it doesn't turn into a several year hunt. Next would be the "fun" of figuring out how to fix one of these densely packed things (especially in the case of the DAT player).

In the 90's I had the Sony models TCD-D3, D7, D8 and finally the TCD-D100.
For sentimental reasons I bought recently a D3 and a D100 (because they have the RENUMBER feature, which is useful if you edit the cassettes).
Fortunately I found also a PCM-M1 (the same as the D100 but without the SCMS limitation) in mint condition but at a valuable price.
But the normal case is that you will have to pay a lot of money to get a machine that needs maintenance although it is advertised as "100% working".
They are difficult to repair if you don't have experience with them. This might easy run from "fun" to a nightmare.
Without the help of Paul Carrington (thank's to member doublecee), I still wouldn't have a Walkman running.
Consider that the D100 has a similar issue like the WM-DD Walkman. There are four gears made of plastic on a metal disc. Over the years the plastic shrinks which causes a bad tape transport. Until today there is no possibility to repair that permanently.
But if you're lucky enough to find a working machine, it's a pleasure to listen to the noise of the load and unload of the tape and, of course, to the brilliant sound. I wish you good luck.

I hope the D8 and 7 don't have that problem, though from what I see in this diagram. (I haven't open up the ones I found yet) But from the diagram I have in the repair guide I believe all the gears are plastic, though I can't be fully sure until I get it open.

This is great news thank you!
Since I'm an absolute beginner in Chinese characters and I am not sure if the link still works: Thank you for any hint to an alternative shop.

I have already bought one set from this seller!
You can use google translator to translate the page, and you should watch video from YouTube how to buy something on Taobao
When I got it, I'll post a photo of how it works in my walkman

May I kindly ask if you got the gear and had the possibility to test it?
    Thank you.
