Hi, my name is Roderick, just started give my old stuff a new life...

Fixed the mini disc player, cleaned the tape deck...
now my DAT walkman has some problems.
All cleaned and lubed. But sometimes locks up. (Caution error in display)

    Tesmode error : 3 - 40 -40

Sometimes it will open sometimes it don't.
Capstan motor is fine and so is the tape travel.
When i get it to play is works fine. But sometimes it just locks up the MODE motor, when changing commands.
I positioned the cam gear as in this YouTube video : SONY TCD-D7 TRANSPORT BASE-PLATE

Maybe still one of the pins is not alligned properly in the cam gear ?

Can the brake plunger cause errors ?
    regards, Rod

    Hi Rod , welcome to s2g. :)

As I understand from your description during play there is no problem but when you press forward or reverse you get an error code.

If that's the case it looks like the take up reel (and/or supply reel) has erratic operation .

Had a brief look at the service manual and error code 40 is "T reel FG is not detected" (take up reel) , I'm not certain if that corresponds to the error you see on your display .
Error code 41 is "S reel FG is not detected" , (supply reel) do you get an error at forward and reverse function of the tape transport ?

Before you dismantle anything try to see if the problem is more persistent or not depending on the load that has the take up reel, in other words if there is difference when the tape is at the beginning the middle or the end of the cassette .

If I understand this correctly the answer is yes.
