I currently own a great Sony HiFi setup at home with a cassette deck and receiver, but my only portable is a Sony TCS-450 that is a little buggy and not really a proper walkman or all that great for HiFi music playback. I did some searching and quickly realized that the D6C seems to be the top end for portable cassette devices. I am hoping to find one in the ~$200 - $250 range with case and strap. I know they usually run more than that, but I thought I might just throw it out there.
You picked one of the more popular models with lower production, they pop up here for sale once in a great while. Keep looking and maybe a BIN will pop up when you least expect it.
Mister X, popular Yes low production No. The D6C was made from 1984 - 2003, i think it was the one with the longest production so there are loads about.
Yup, about eight have popped up on eBay in the last two days and I have a working list of ones I’m looking at. But eBay has bitten me before and I figured if I could work with some other enthusiasts it would be better for me in the long run.
I sold one on here a while back, but not for $250. I still have 2 left but i am keeping those. Keep looking and you will find one.
Thanks! I’m flexible with the price, I’m just concerned with having to work on one that needs repairing.
The chances are whatever you get will need work, unless you get it from a shop that has refurbished it and that will not be cheap.
Thanks! It certainly looks nice. Where might I be able to find a battery case? It might have a slew of other issues though, but I will keep my eye on it. EDIT: It says UK postage only. Oh well.
Also consider that it’s not the most portable of portable walkmans. You can use a basic 6V negative polarity mains adaptor instead of the battery pack. It’s also possible to get 6V from a portable battery although most of these are USB and therefore 5V is the maximum, so you’d need a) negative pin and b) more power than the standard phone battery which more to the point, is even less portable! But a car adaptor is possible. Depends what you intend to do with it really. Sat at home making a tape would be better on mains power just for cost reasons
I know it's not the most portable thing in the world, but I kind of like the idea shouldering it around. I'm not going to go jogging with it of course, and I will probably mostly use it on my desk at work. How hard would it be to find a knob for this one? https://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-Walkm...ash=item1a77b0d71c:g:LkMAAOSw5k1cgTO9&LH_BO=1
It would be as hard as a battery case I think, mostly there are people who auction spares on eBay every so often. I’m often looking for the wm-D3 glass which sometimes comes up but always too expensive! Also that is a D6, the D6C predecessor which is slightly different and potentially much older
AH! Thanks for pointing that out, it is listed erroneously. I have been trying to keep an eye out for the yellow lettering instead of the green.
The thing to remember is the D6C had several versions over its 20 year life, so newer ones from 2003 are also different to the first models in 1983. The playback heads are different, the PCB is different and the machine was revised with cheaper components at different times. I think people tend toward low serial number but I can’t imagine it makes a huge difference
Gotta love that '80s flare! What is that connected to it btw? speedy2.0 - Yeah, I have noticed folks talking about the difference in the heads but I think I would be happy just to have a decent version of the player that works/records.
Well i do get funny looks here in the UK too, but i don't care. Some people know what it is stop to talk to me on the train and some what to listen and some point and laugh.
