I found some cool videos, these may have been posted in the past, I remember some of the older members were posting them years ago but I don't recall which ones. This is a great history of Sony, the production line parts are priceless, it's not as high-tech as you would think.

History of Pioneer, I never knew they started as a speaker manufacturer. Around the 18:00 mark they start showing boomboxes, including one of the all-time coolest minis, the SK-Q10. Another great video, post more if you've seen good ones!

We were talking about UK company Ferguson a couple of weeks ago.

The video of their TV production line is cool

the one that follows it is also quite interesting showing how PCBs are made and assembled. I'm surprised they were so far forward in 1960.

I'd love to know what reject rate was on the board production and if they tested them before final assembly. Cool stuff Longman.

In the second video they talk quite a bit about testing and aligning the boards before fitting them into the chassis. What is amusing given all the emphasis in longevity is that the TVs they are making in that film will become obsolete (but still usable) in just four years when BBC2 launches on UHF 625 lines.

I have an excellent book "The Setmakers" about the history of the British TV and Radio industry. It explains that the reason the Japanese manufacturers were so successful is that they were really strict about the quality of the components they bought, rejecting a whole batch if they found a single faulty one. Therefore they achieved a much higher success rate at first power up, and better reliability as everything was well within tolerance. I notice someone at Sony bashing the sets with a rubber hammer. In the comments someone says they were employed to do that at a Philips CRT factory.

Given all the other investment I am sure Ferguson would have tested their boards on some kind of ATE (Automatic Test Equipment) before putting them into the set. The company I work for had a similar board assembly set up when I started there in 1989. Now everything like that is subcontracted out.

The Sony video at the start of the thread is very interesting. The emphasis at one point on U-Matic video tapes without mentioning Betamax dates it between 1971 and 1975. I wonder how many of those facilities still exist. A few perhaps, as I know all Raspberry Pi computers are made by Sony in the UK in what used to be their main TV factory.

I just saw a really old TV in someone's basement, I let him know that some of the early video games guys like the old sets for the game systems. I'm sticking with the little ones for now, I want to get my "display" looking good and maybe rent it out.

I finally got a Raspberry Pi, for MAME, such much fun for it's tiny size, I wish I had time to mess around with it more, that's great that it's built in Sonys old factory.

This guy popped up while I was watching my favorite vintage metal lathe restorations channel, he does a great job of cleaning of years of filth, I guess the power washer is the way to go, I've been wasting my time with IPA. He's been getting a lot of views on his channel.
