I have one of the 250 10th anniversary Tiffany silver-plate WM-701T walkman. It has never been used previously. When I tried it for the first time today it did not work; the spindles did not move at all. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a repair service in LA that can be recommended? Thank you.
I searched for these type of service and couldn't find anyone in California. You can still search and I am sure there technicians that can fix your walkman. Is there any corrosion in the battery compartment?? You can open the walkman and have a look at inside. Probably you can make it operational by changing the belt and some cleaning.
Thanks for your note, Boodokhan. The battery is held in an external plastic case that attaches to the Walkman so corrosion is not a problem. I'm reluctant to try to get this going myself so I really need to find someone skillful and careful so as not to cause either mechanical or cosmetic damage. I intend to put it up for sale once this is done.
This might be Fun: lets make this a “community project”! If @Boodokhan has one dead WM-701 in his stash (and his collection of Walkmans beats my collection of “tactical folders”) then I will fix it and then I will be ready to fix this Silver-plated Beauty. No charges from me (I finance this hobby of mine by reviving Discmans) but maybe a donation to S2G when Tiffany is sold? Just a thought... and then (maybe) I will post some photos of my Tactical Folders collection, when running from the Woolsey Fire my son forced me to dump them in the trunk of my Saab: these are the only reminder of my Good’ol’days
The most skillful and careful person I have ever met is @Jorge and thankfully he is our neighbor in Malibu. I have few 701 and as far as I remember they all work. I will be more than happy to get you one of them since by your magic touch everything will work better.
Thanks to both of you for suggestions and offer of assistance; greatly appreciated. I am about to order a new belt for the 701T from marrscommunications.com. Glad to make a donation to S2G from sale proceeds.
Select the most beaten one and I will pick it up from you this Sat morning. Meanwhile I am ordering new pinchrollers and a belt from @mihokm to make yours better than new
Mission Accomplished : Here is WM-702 that I borrowed from my friend @Boodokhan for this mini-project: The only difference between WM-702 and WM-701 seems to be a button for lid opening in 702 vs. a slider in 701. 3+2+2 screws to open its back (no need to touch the screws on the lid): Once opened (pull up from the "gondola side" then away from h/p jack and volume control) the belt is right in front of you: New belts from @mihokm seem to be a Gold Standard for Walkmans, as Marrscommunications is for the cassette decks. Unless your old belt had turned into goo, cleaning the path and rebelting is a 5-min job. Old pinchrollers look OK, with just a few shaved spots on them. Two screws flanking Sony logo release the lid, then you can unlock the head-pinchrollers block from the main body. One spring and one tiny washer per pinchroller, and it is all yours: Pin can be pushed out from plastic holder with a toothpick! Sliding rubber off the plastic hub takes only minimal effort: new pinchrollers from @mihokm installed: Looks GOOD, sounds ~OK: W&F specs are NOT mentioned in WM-701/702 Service Manuals, usually this is an indicator that W&F is way over the roof! Lets see if we improved the specs, or at least did not do harm to the patient. W&F of WM-702 as received (L), after re-belt (center) and with new pinchrollers/speed adjustment (R): Speed is easily adjustable, but what else to do to improve W&F ??? I know the answer: get WM-D6C!!!
