Sony wins the day but TDK is right there and what's going on with Maxell, I kind of had the same exerience with Maxells, the early 80's versions were bulletproof for copying albums and using them in boxes and cars but later in the 80's they didn't seem nearly as good. I was just a dumb kid on a very tight budget and good tapes weren't cheap back then so we'd remember the bad mid-grades tapes.

SONY HF is always a favorite cassette for me but according to this survey scored very low on performance

The SONY HF and the TDK D are always very decent tapes. In this survey they are compared to a better alternatives (good ferrics and superferrics) so it scores low comparing to them. I bet most of the competition were more expensive so it has to be taken in mind.
HF-S, AD-S, Denon DX4 or FR-I play in another league...

Can you share your comments on "Thats" cassette. I think this brand was introduced in the late 80's.

In my opinion That's was a bit underrated but they made excellent tapes, in all three types. A special mention to their chrome tapes with metal particles (a mix of type II and IV).

The photo image shown above (That's MG-X Metal Type IV) is a beautiful example of 1980s analogue cassette tape excellence. High quality build, stunning performance, symmetry of appearance that is unparalleled. I believe that a comparable Taiyo Yuden manufactured edition was released in North America as Triad MG-X. I've used the Triad MG-X version over the years, and created my recording of MFSL's Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" album upon an MG-X C-60, primarily for the excellent pyramidal shaped windows on the MG-X cassette shell. Can you dig that DSotM, pyramids theme, terrestrial roaming via superb audio fidelity experiences ???

Anyone who has experiences with Triad MR-X Pro cassettes, please inform us.

Those are rather scarce, expensive too ..... NOS or gently used, I'm interested.

In the latest post I did about cassette reviews, you have one from HIFI Choice, 1989 where it is:

    upload_2019-12-13_21-22-1.png

That's all the info you need ;-)
You just have to learn how to read them.
Basically the peaks can go up to +5 VU (over Dolby).

    Hiya!

I used to use That's cassettes regularly back in the day and can attest to their excellent sound and robust shells.

Personal favourites are the MG-X, MR-X Pro and Suono models. Less impressive were any with a clear shell; definitely less robust although the tapes themselves were decent sounding.

The MG-X are a very smooth, even sounding cassette, much like a Maxell MX.

MRX-Pro is a premium metal with a stronger midrange and treble, much more allied to a Sony Metal ES in character, but slightly tamed.

Suono models have a very strong shell and winds smoothly. The sound is more like the MGX but firms everything up in all frequencies. I find it compares to a Fuji Metal in this respect.

    Hope this helps!

From all I've read, they made their own tape, anybody know if this is true? I'll try to do some more digging, it's extremely hard with that name.

I managed to buy one Triad EM—X90 and one That’s MG- X last week . I bought the Triad tape from Cassette Comeback for £24.99 plus postage and the That’s on E-bay for £12.99 and both are new and unopened I am not sure how dear these are normally but I guessed they were worth buying from what has been said. Here are a couple of pictures of each of them. I also bought a few weeks earlier three others from Cassette Comeback. They comprise a Professional iCM 90 , a Sony FX-11 and a Capture C60 and here is a picture of all three.

Those are good finds, Phillip .....

Wishing I could grab a couple of the That's or Triad MG-X cassettes for the pricing you found.

The treasure hunt continues as holiday season is upon us !!!

    Cheers,

    Bleusy

    Hi Hugo,
Wow, many, many thanks for posting this! These are really great. I'd been looking for the Audio Nov. '87 issue forever. Could never find it...
Some of these publications I never heard of before; like 'What Hi-Fi', 'Hi-Fi Choice' & 'Hi-Fi For Pleasure' Though they are all an interesting read.
Excellent job on the scans & all the work you did with this.
    Best regards.....
