So, 1979 - 2019.... I wonder if we will see Sony acknowledge the walkmans 40th. My money is on them doing very little unless its a limited edition Digital player. A coffee table book would be nice, similar in style to the Japanese Walkman Chronicle book. Perhaps some branded Apparel
I guess they might make a new batch of stickers to stick on the flash memory Walkmans that they are still selling. They could use this one as a template which was on my WM-FX479 (a late issue cassette based model). Looking around Ebay it seems that every Walkman they produced in 1999 got one of those stuck on it. Happy New Year, Happy Birthday Walkman, and where did the last twenty years go ?
Sony doesn't seem to show any signs of giving up on the Personal Music Player business. Curry's lists five distinct Walkman models including one suitable for swimming ! In contrast I wouldn't be at all surprised if 2019 was the year when Apple discontinues the Ipod, which is already down to one model.
I think TC4 is correct. My guess is that there will be various 40th Anniversary models at various price points including an uber expensive TOTL one in a special case etc.
Yep , the Sony NW-X1060 (1050 /16gb) with OLED touch screen , metal chassis ,microphones on the superb earphones for the Noise Canceling ,great battery autonomy using mine almost daily 10 years now and never needed any kind of service. And yes great sound.
I would love to see Sony do an anniversary rerelease of the Tps-l2 or Wm-3, it may not happen, but I think it would be a neet year long limited edition product if it were ever to happen
Don't kid yourself, with an iconic product's birthday they will milk it for all it's worth. The timing is great with the resurgence of cassettes, maybe they'll pull out some old parts bins and put together some limited edition models.
I think with the release of NAC, RTM and ATR magnetics’ new cassette formulas in the coming months, it would be madness if Sony didn’t take some sort of action and take it up to 50 years nice and gently, rather than panic at the idea ina few years time. In the same fashion of Polaroid which closed its manufacturing production plants only to be bought wholesale a few years later, and are now owned by that enthusiast group entirely, the niche market which walkmans and Polaroids occupy can be pretty vibrant as long as the small community is brought along with it. If the Polaroid sx-70 was the iPod of the 70s in terms of revolutionary ideas, the Walkman likewise takes a similar place in history
I want one but not sure if I can afford the £400ish it's going to be, and probably a limited release too I'd imagine
It's a bit boring, I don't like the idea it runs all that Android crap like "Google Maps" they should have stripped it down a bit better. If I had to go with something like that, I'd choose a ZX300 Walkman though.
I found today a Sony 40th anniversary unit for sale on EBay. Here is the link if anyone is interested I think there is a saving on the original price as well but not much ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-NW-...a=1&pg=2060778&_trksid=p2060778.c100290.m3507
The funny thing is: you should actually LISTEN to these thingies before you buy: some sound like crap, some sound pretty decent, but you never know... You Must Listen First!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and before you ask: Questyle DAP sounds fine to my ears, Pono Player is what I actually have and have No intentions to discard! bottom line: buy a cheapo used Pono and enjoy the best DIGITAL has to offer... avoid FIIO if you can help it, it is as Flat and Uninvolving as per God's design... but CHEAP!!!
That really is profiteering. £364 for a brand new unit from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NW-A1...1?keywords=sony+a100TPS&qid=1577265989&sr=8-1 The RRP was £399. My prediction is £150 for a used unit in a couple of years. Maybe they will then start rising.
