You mentioned that you don't work on the smaller circuit boards, I'm assuming you mean surface mount, have you watched any of the "My Mate Vince" Videos I've posted where he does some modern Walkmans? He uses some gels that seem to isolate the heat on the metal so you can remove those little components. His skill level is a little above mine but he learns and gets them working again.
My hands shake with real tiny soldering work. I just bought a new soldering iron. I will try soon to repair the panasonic I opened recently
