A new 'slowing down' issue with my Technics M225 when fast-fowarding

Hi all, it's been quite a while since I've been here; life and other commitments have gotten in the way.

Anyhow I was using my Technics deck today and noticed a strange new issue; I cleaned the heads and pinch roller within it (and my currently-used Walkman) 20-30 minutes prior, and used it to fast-forward a tape. However before it actually reached the end of the tape, the fast-forward mechanism was audibly slowing and visibly slowing down and eventually came to a stop with the tape in. No damage to the tape or anything...
I put the tape back in, and the FF was working and went to the end (took an extra second or two).

Now I decided to see what would happen when the deck isn't loaded, and left the FF mechanism to run for 5 minutes - no issues! I want to believe that maybe the pinch roller hadn't dried fully and that this was simply a minor thing, but I'm wondering if you all have any thoughts as to why this may have sprung up all of a sudden. I certainly hope it's not a belt problem (yet!) as it would be troublesome to order in belts from another country what with everything going on in the world.

Thanks for reading, have a nice day :)

I tried fast forwarding the same tape again and no issues. I'm quite interested in why this would occur all of a sudden for just one use... Maybe I didn't leave the roller to dry long enough? Never happened before this.

I had something similar with a boomer I just rebelted, I played with it a lot and the best I could figure is the cassette wasn't seated properly against the hubs. Did you pull off the door when you did the cleaning (some tape decks have removable doors). I think I have that deck and used it a couple weeks ago, I didn't do any work on it and it worked great, those have really nice meters.

I don't believe I did but in hindsight I think the cassette simply wasn't seated properly. I've been testing out all my other tapes the past 2 days and they'll all been fast-forwarding perfectly. It's a really nice deck with great fluorescent meters, I believe I'll need to get on the case to rebelt it as soon as the quarantine restrictions ease though, I don't think it's ever been serviced and even though it works fantastically I don't want to push my luck! Still need to send my WM-DD to get fixed soon too.
