Back in october 2009 i offered dusty old vz2000 for sale on the old forum for £85 plus postage . but most people just wanted a part so i broke it to help out . Last week i found the leftovers and decided to do something with what i have .this is still work in progress as i want to make sure all internals are mounted secure and cables are tidy . So lots of re routing and shuffling going on at this stage .
This is what manufacturers should be offering us today. There again the Apsung Galaxy iPhone 16 will probably have a screen that big. The silly thing is that with an LCD screen such boxes become practical. I have seen some cheap Chinese boxes with 7 or 9" screens but nothing like this. Could we have a Video or pictures without the crazy angles please.
I will sort out the first batch of pics then post updates as it goes . Im thinking of putting the dvd player display along the frequency window . And i have to make brackets to hold microswitches so i can make use of original buttons . If i have a wish list it will be the 2 volume knobs and a FM button . Can be just casted in resin if anyone offers that so i can keep the controls looking how they should . End plan is to give my daughter a compact nearly portable media centre that she will make use of when she goes UNI next year . She already rates it a 15 out of ten
One of the pictures shows a wider screen bezel . It looked too early for what i wanted to acheive so you will notice it becomes more of a slender bezel at some point . Blutooth board with line in needed a mod to actually get line in to switch . I will get the board id and post the mod also
I always thought that the 1980s Sharp and Panasonic TV Boomboxes would have been ideal for a Uni Student at the time. My sister's 18th Birthday present was a 12" Sanyo Black & White portable to take to Uni. What size screen did you manage to fit in the VZ2000 ?
The screen enters the speaker grill plastics by 5mm each side . These were modified to accept the screen . Its a 15 inch screen
Kind of Ironic given that Sharp could have made something like this years ago. The first large (20") LCD TV I saw was was a Sharp. That was at an exhibition back in the mid 1990s years before they appeared in the shops. I also recall seeing a Sharp laptop in Dixons with an excellent looking TFT display, back when everyone else's had those dreadful Dual Scan LCDs with a response time of about 500ms (the reason Windows had the option for mouse trails). I guess the laptop was out of the price range of all but the University Chancellor back then though.
Hi all . Sorry for delay in updates .Been a bit busy with tv repairs in the workshop but finally got the VZ back on the bench . Using silver tape i have kinda previewed where the fresh silver paintjob will extend to . Also i remember being so jealous of anyone who had a spectrum display on there boombox many years ago so ive added one . Also the vol and tuning holes will become ventilation when tv is on sporting silent rgb fans . The redundant cassete holder has a nice custom mod coming next . Just waiting for some things to be delivered . The next update after paint should be quite a nice one . There is room for a stereo2go logo on this build should site owners wish to contact and add a subtle touch . Speakers ...... still undecided as to dump the box grilles and insert 6 inch round custom grilles within the apperture having the red ring on the outer diameter and flush with the mesh . Also the radio frequency window will have a nice touch behind it with an idea i am sure will blow you away . Still modding . Hope to share the paint job with you very soon . I am missing the FM silver button if anyone can help me with one to put there else i will need to fill and close it soon for the paint . If anyone can help with that give me a shout please .
Great work. If you are trying to think of a name for it can I suggest the Discoheavy. I'm sure it weighs far more than a Discolite. p.s. Was there supposed to be audio on the video. I couldn't hear any.
