Is this unit ugly to you or is it magnificent to behold?

I recently bought a ZS-D55, (edit as I've checked and it is a ZS-D55) and I concur with the cd-mechanism, whilst a marvel to watch the drive unfold from inside itself, mine does play after some coaxing with a light clean of the lens, however it stutters every now and then. The sound is quite thin too, but then seeing that the speakers are only 8cm, it comes as no surprise. It's a shame as there is clearly more room, judging by the grilles, to fit a larger, more responsive speaker, but Sony took the cheap option.

The Aiwa is typical of their 90's/00's efforts, all flashing lights and cheap looking, however, I must be the only one who likes this unit! Not a beauty by any shakes of the imagination, but I quite like it for some reason! The last Aiwa unit I bought from eBay was a CSD-MD5 that has a CD player and MD player/recorder and a flip down front, and actually does sound pretty good (to my ears anyway!)

It's amazing how the same shape and style dominated all of the brands through the 90's and 2000's. I think the Bose Wave Radio was leading the market in the USA and everyone copied it's design. I've got a JVC Clavia, Hello Kitty Edition, from around this time and it's not a bad little box but there's no battery compartment. You can definately see the iMac Influences which everyone was also copying in the early 2000's.

Personally some of these radios are great for rooms where you don't want to risk a collectable radio but still want CD or cassette.

To be fair although these were at the end of the boombox era most of them probably sound better than 80's boomboxes....i have never had any of them as i was busy buying kabooms launched in 1999 but they offer CD MD and cassette so what is not to like about them....80's boxes will always be worth more only because they are older but i bet some of these are better just like most of the eggs posted on my thread on boomboxery lads....im busy listening to the m90 at the moment and if im honest im not overly impressed and that is one of the best of 80's boxes

Only time will tell if that is true. The bottom seems to have fallen out of the valve / tube radio market and I doubt if they are worth what they were fetching thirty years ago; certainly not in real terms.

In contrast a Kaboom could be a good investment. About twelve years ago I went to a school fete and they were using a Kaboom on the stage for the background music. If kids admired them then or maybe even had one, once they are in their forties and earning decent money they might suddenly feel the need to buy one to remind themselves of their youth. If the CD drive still works that will be another reason for buying. They will be hunting out "antique" Jay-Z CDs and playing them on their Kaboom.

Yup when the 80's kids are gone i can't see many wanting 80's boxes, lucky for me i have never bought to invest, i just use them for what they were intended for....all i ask is that when im gone my family don't get them or the council lol

And kabooms are already not worth buying as the cassette decks chew tapes the rollers go hard and i have found no way of replacing them, i have had several all with the same fault

Wow, I kinda like that CSD-MD5 box. Very modern looking in a better way than my FD82.
