Hi everyone, I think this forum may be my last hope to try and get my much loved Sony DD9 working again. So far over the past 2 years its spent over 18months at 2 so called specialist in London that were unable to fix it. The last specialist thinks he found the problem, a cracked gear (part 368) on attached diagram and thanks to help from Roland on the Facebook Walkman Group we think its the green transluscent gear in the middle of the attached picture. Can anyone please help… A: provide a replacement gear B: Have a donor machine going C: Has had this part moulded as 3D printing apparently wont work Hoping someone can keep so i can get this beauty working again! Thanks
Hi Ian, I suppose you are talking about that green cam gear that's broken. It's unfortunate, because the only place you are going to find that gear is from a donor unit. I can confirm that 3D printing is not an option, it just does not have enough resolution to print such fine details and the final 3D printed product is fragile compared to the original. These types of gears can only be made using injection molding, but that's also not an option, unless you make at least 1000 pcs. Marian Mihokm did a center gear replacement for the DD series (DD9 is different from the series with a center gear, although still a DD). I read that thread and realised it's not simple to make such a gear. I suggest to post in the "Gear that you want" section of the forum and ask for a donor DD9. Maybe someone has one that has other problems and is willing to sell it for spares. By the way, where is that gear broken ? Are you talking about that slot in the bottom ? It may supposed to be that way.
Hello Ian and welcome to Stereo2go. Here are some photos which I took while repairing a DD9 a few weeks ago. There are two of the green gears, one on top as you disassemble the unit and one on the bottom. They appear to be the same part number and so, I assume they are identical. There is a slot and a short section with no teeth on the gear. Firstly, what is wrong with your machine? What are the symptoms? If you do have a broken gear, are they both broken or is one intact? If the problem is a broken gear, it looks as if your options are to repair it or, possibly, make a silicone mold using the good gear and cast a resin replacement. However, I'm not sure if a resin replacement would be accurate enough and it could be too brittle. I agree with Valentin that 3D printing is not an option at the moment. However it is a technology which is still in its infancy and developing fast. Maybe in a few years time a 3D printed replacement will be feasible.
I have access to a resin 3d printer, that I made a gear for my Philips AZ6897 portable CD player. That fixed the fault of the original gear that had fallen to bits. The grey middle one is the one I drew and printed. I`m offering, if you can send the gear (or the player) to me, I`ll see if I can get one printed. Pity for me though, the laser will not pick up any CDs....
Thanks for getting back to me Valentin and i feared this may be the case. Ive been told by the technician who tried to repair it that its cracked so not seen it myself and don’t even know if its the bottom or top gear. Just need to decide whether I’m capable to take it apart! Ian
Cheers Deb64, Ive been told its cracked and don’t know whether its the top or bottom gear to be honest. If I’m brave enough to take apart (if its easy) i may take simon up on his offer to give resin printing a go Ian
Cheers Simon, when i get it back (still with brother in north london) and if I’m feeling brave enough to open her up and remove the gears i may well take you up on the offer. Let you know but going to be a while before i get it back Be in touch Ian
For a novice it is a risk of losing those small cut-washers when taking gears out, as they tend to fly out if you do not keep a finger over or put too much pressure with tweezers. It's obvious those 2 brass wheels and some other parts need to come out first, before the cam gears become accesible. @Deb64 is the UK as well and may help you with a proffessional repair. That's why you need to describe what the symptoms are first, as she asked. We must first confirm 100% if a broken gear is indeed the problem or is it something else. Good luck with getting your DD9 repaired !
@Ian Smeaton , I so far have repaired my the amp switch mechnism, tape drive belt replace and clean the mech, CD drive drawer problem (would not stay closed) on my Sony LBT-D905 Also repaired a Sony VHS SLV-E80 - faulty PSU, broken tape load gear, cease pinch roller and broken load mechanism. And Sony DAT DCT-690 - would not load tapes properly, would not play, and problems with other tape motion also. So I can offer to look at it for you if you wish? I will be honest, I`m not a `professional`, but I do enjoy fixing and take pride in all things I work on. Just I cant fix CD player lenses that dont read :/
@Deb64 I`m in Leicester too... so if you end up repairing this DD9, lets work together and I`ll get a new gear printed if required.
Simon, that sounds like a good plan if the problem is the gear and if Ian decides to contact me regarding a repair.
Unfortunately not and it looks like now Ive finally got it back from the guys that tried to fix it its got different issues than before so i fear its destined to be non operational : (
Hopefully you will get it fixed, but if it’s beyond repair let me know as I need the ribbon cable that links the front logic controls to the main board.
TC4: You know you could probably make one yourself? Or repair one that is broken which should be easier.
Raul Doctor Walkman has my DD9 and he is going to make one up for me, but I was just looking around to see if I can have an original.
But those are used too and could break same way yours did. I would go with what Doctor Walkman will do.
