I guess MiniDiscs then didn't have any computer interface so had to be recorded in real time just like a tape. I do recall a HiFi enthusiast I know who was also into Amateur Dramatics saying that he had bought a MiniDisc deck as, with random access, it was ideal for sound effects etc in their productions.

Thinking back to the state of computing back in 1994 USB hadn't been released yet so high speed peripherals had to connect through a parallel port (which the only DCC deck to have a computer interface used). Almost all home computer networking was by dial up. Even at the fastest available speed of 56K it would have taken you 1.6 days to download the data on a single MiniDisc ! A bit inconvenient when your AOL subcription only included 5 hours a month usage. Thinking about my own computer back then it had 370MBytes of hard drive space in total. The big appeal of CD-ROM was that it allowed you to have things like encyclopaedias that would never have fitted on a hard disk unless you had £1000s to spend.

No wonder people stuck to physical media back then.

Sony's move to Singapore in 1987, from The Business Times, 1987
It would have been neat to see all of the iconic products they were ramping up to produce parts for.

An interesting unit from 1984, the Sanyo RP-AMT1 a solar powered radio, did it ever make it to production? I'm finding articles that indicate Sanyo was big into solar, one of the management had a solar home.

Remarkable conclusion: DD100 is the winner, but the DDII is the better cheaper choice.

Unfortunately I can't read it but it looks like the DDII is reviewed in the 12/85 issue. That little Hitachi CP 55 R looks interesting, I'll have to look for one.

Summarized, it is something along these lines: the DDII, which is 180 Mark (currency at the time) cheaper, is on the same level. The DDII combined with the Koss PortaPro 1 outperforms the DD100, also in terms of bass.

    Edit: page 45 seems missing?

Thanks for checking, I was just wondering what was on it since the articles posted don't seem to miss a section.
The 12/85 issue I could not locate while searching, at least not a publicly available one.

Just an ad, here's a link to HiFi Archives Stuff, he's had one of the best info website for years, it's nice to see him uploading it to archive.org. There's a ton of reviews and equipment available.

Here are the scanned images of a little booklet Sony released in the 90s in the Netherlands.
The booklet is in Duch and contains tips and tricks to help a novice take the utmost care of their portable device and cassette tapes. As you can see, I read it quite a few times back then.

I know, some are saying I have no life but really, I'm just taking breaks, I'm working on a monster deck addition and lugging around blocks of concrete has me worn out....

Some cool Sony Products from 1986 and the Hitachi TRK-W2W Kangaroo Boombox!
