From what I understand the pre-recorded discs used a different technology to the recordable ones so the comparison is as meaningful as comparing the price of a CD with a CD-RW. Anyway like all mainstream media prices came down somwhere I have a 1992 computer magazine in which there is an advert for a multi £ thousand Philips CD writer and blank discs for £25 each. That was when computer hard drives were sized in MBytes not GBytes.

That is interesting especially the bit about sound quality. On the subject of audio compression techniques I still find it incredible that the used Susan Vega "Tom's Diner" to develop and test MP3
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom's_Diner#The_"Mother_of_the_MP3"

The track is one of the most atypical recordings for a long time. Something that sounds particularly bad on highly compressed music (as heard on DAB) is audience applause. An actual music track that sounds bad is

The already processed sounding Hi-Hat with a very fast attack throughout the track doesn't come across at all well.

this was really a good read. ive had many of these decks in my home at one point or another. i went with net md and the 1gb variants but always kept going back to my tryst old non scms MZ1's, both of which i got the same year when they launched. i still use them to this day. it is interesting that one of my early 60 minute discs from sony could be "fooled" to record 74 minutes! this was odd when i found this out back int he day and never knew why until many years later.

It would have been great with a (even half decent) black and white picture of the device :)
