This has to be one of the first mini-stereos, the audiolabor from 1977, digital readout was hot and expensive around this time.

I've got a couple of UHER Tape Decks but this mini-system is super-neat. Autoreverser has posted information on these before, check out those threads!

I found some other Otake Equipment in the newpaper ads, I vaguely remember the name.

Otake Series 84 from 1981, 70 watts per channel? I think they meant total, the speakers are rated to 50 watts.

I changed the title and thought we could include cool car "compo" stereos since they're the brother of the mini-systems, some of these are amazing and it was a cool time when you could have this stack in the middle of your dashboard. Feel free to contribute anything!

Today I went round the Charity shops in Christchurch and one had one of these (from 1997) looking like new for £20

It is good thing that I walked there as otherwise I might have been tempted.
The irony is that if I had seen a system like that for £80 in 1997 I would have thought it was a bargain.

They might sound great but they just look so cheap. I always loved square corners the most, maybe with some round shapes thrown in, but then the Ford Taurus came out and ruined design for over 12 years. Those cool little Hondas from the 80's turned into little jelly beans and didn't have the same appeal.

Hopefully those all-in-one units are kind of like boomboxes, pretty soon we'll see more and more of the nicer high-end units, the ones that went for big money and were more rare, I sure they're out there but since they aren't dated they're probably still in regular use.

Interestingly that unit does list what may be true wattage and it has MIC mixing, I never remember seeing that over here.

They don't sound that good and by then the quality was out the window....i have the nsx 999 mk 2, only bought it because it was top of the range and it was the most powerful of the whole range but like most things i have bought sadly it never gets used...if i put mine on real speakers though the place will shake and it becomes a monster

In the 1997 catalogue you can see that this is close to bottom of the Aiwa range. It was just the price and condition that I thought was interesting. Back then £20 would only have bought you two new CDs, or if you were lucky four second hand ones. Every Charity shop I went in had shelves of CDs at £1 each or less. CDs and the equipment to play them on are literally at pocket money prices now, although I guess the problem is you wont ever find an Ariana Grande CD in a charity shop and probably never will as most kids stream her.

Last time I had a similar Aiwa I gave it away to a colleague without even looking inside to see why the tape decks didn't work. The only reason I bought it was because it came with some rather nice Gale bookshelf speakers which I still have.
