I've never seen one, obviously CD trays have the smaller indent for the little CDs to play but it never made it overhere as a portable player. One of the members posted a bunch of his equipment a few weeks ago and I thought I saw one, I asked about it and I think he changed his photos because it disappeared. Post some photos when you get it, they look pretty cool, a little bigger than an MD player....

Yes it will play standard Audio mini CDs

Good luck in finding any. A quick search on eBay gave me

I think the record companies quickly realised it made more sense to make all discs as 5" and stick a few extra remixes on the singles.

Sony catered for both sizes with their D88.

It wasn't exactly a machine you would want to take jogging with a full size CD though

Machines like the Philips you have bought, date back to when people thought it was wonderful that you could fit 3 normal CDs onto a smaller disc using MP3 which all the manufacturers claimed was "Near CD quality".

You can still get the required Mini CDs to make your own compilations.

Back when the same amount of data on memory card cost several £100s it made sense.

Today it is a collectable which is far less practical than a new £50 Sony Walkman

My guess at the most likely problem is finding that the included software only runs under Windows 98 or something. However, you might not even need it as an alternative like Windows Media Player might work.
The big downside of all the early Sony Atrac equipment was that it locked you into using their Sonic Stage software. That was when people went off the Sony Walkmans.

Personally I think you got a bargain with the second unit which looks as if it will play standard CDs.
I went in Sainsbury's yesterday and couldn't resist "Belinda Carlisle - Gold". "All the Hits on 3CDs"
which seems to be an accurate description. New, shrink wrapped, and £3 !
I also bought a magazine and that was £4.99.

It wasn't that long ago you had to spend £1.80 on a Sunday Newspaper to get a free CD on which half the dozen or so tracks were sometimes live performances.

It depends on who it is, but with many artists that is true. I also bought "Essential Diana Ross & The Supremes" triple CD. That was £5.
There was a time when a CD compilation was a good present. Now a birthday card and some paper to wrap it would cost more than the CD itself

well she is in.....think i have stumbled on a diamond, smaller than a modern 90's cassette walkman seems to be built well
has gold plated headphone socket and menu driven bass treble......takes 2 triple a batteries and that means it is as powerful as most good walkmans and yes the sound is great much better than the portable mini disc of the day....it seems that rare i can't find any on youtube...there is actually another one for sale on uk ebay but it's £100 more and it's actually bigger than mine doesn't look no where near as good ether, well chuffed pics on the way later......thanks again longman for helping me again nice one guys

It looks like we have a few of the 3" CD mp3 players over here for sale, I never saw that format before, pretty neat.

For most people it wouldn't make sense until cheap CD burners appeared. I bought the first one I saw for under £100 back in 1999, and that was with a rebate .
The write speed was 2x, although I guess a 3" disc would only take about ten minutes.

I have been trying to find CD Burners in the Argos catalogue but guess they were a bit too specialist for them.
Here is the full size Expanium back in 2003
    Philips expanium.jpg
In the same catalogue basic CD players were around £25.
I recall a colleague having an MP3 based CD player and boasting how he could fit 12 albums on a CD.
He obviously wasn't too worried about sound quality :nodding:
