I have been restoring an Aiwa HS-J2, recap, cleaning, adjustment, service basically!
After lot's of time and effort spent on making the machine function properly I am perturbed that the machine plays well for a period of time then it slows down and freezes,,,,,
I have been over and over the mechanism and I cannot figure out why this is happening,,, please if anybody has any ideas what could be causing this could some light be cast,,,
I am at my Witt's end with this,, please help

    Kind regards Shaman

Greetings first off thanks for your answer!
You know I think the motor still runs although I did harbour the belief that it might be down to overheating motor,, However I have discovered that if I throw the cuing toggle switch, Fwd or reverse it appears to jolt the good play operation once again! It can also resume proper play operation if I add extra pressure to the already engaged play button,,,, can you fathom it out from my description friend?

    Kind regards Warren

Capstans all fine,, transport the tape through,
I could really make use of diagrams service manual stuff, or could follow examples of default positions pictures regards the mechanism,,,,
This has quite a complexed mechanism that it would be very easy to not line something up properly or not set a default position correctly,,

When mine do that a common problem is the belt is not strong enough to pull the spools. I can't remember if it's the take-up or supply that slows it down. Usually the belt is slipping because it is a hair too loose or getting dry and hard.

This is one of my favorite units, I tend to stay towards the early model of portables and I love any that have an antenna and can record.

Greetings thanks for your answer not sure it is that but I will try and put in another belt on as it's an easy thing to do by this point, and I will let you know if it was the issue! Thanks buddy,,, I don't suppose you have details of the mechanism or access to a service manual for these do you?

    Kind regards Warren

I love to imagine what could cause such problems (I don't have experience fixing walkmans yet ... maybe in 30d). It seems possible that maybe one of the gears has a flaw in the teeth and after a random amount of time it could jam together with another gear. If you could test it while all taken apart, make take a photo as it starts or a movie, that might prove helpful. Does this problem happen after a fixed amount of time (which might support a hypothesis to over heating or battery voltage droop) or does it take a random amount of time before the problem happens? If the motor is still making sound while it's freezing, then that suggests that once the belt slips, it keeps slipping. In any case, watching the problem occur might help you to diagnose the issue and fix it sooner, good luck!
