Hi. I have a problem with used walkman I bought. The battery light is normally flashing when i hit function button. When I hit play I hear one beep in headphones and nothing happens. Then after few seconds battery diode lights up for longer and I hear few rapid beeps in headphones. Sometimes when I hit play I hear single mechanical click under circuit board. I didn't know it is possible without motor spinning at all. It isn't tape switch as without cassette the signal is different and there's no light. Please, any ideas what to search for?
Hi, kryzys have you opened the walkman? The WM-EX505 models are robust, usually only the belt needs to be replaced. I would check that first. New one can be found on fixyouraudio.com. Download the service manual from hifiengine.com is a very good start. Good luck!
Thanks for respond. Yes, all those observations I did with opened walkman and motor didn't move at all.
I would clean the switches themselves to eliminate increased resistance in the switches as a potential problem. To me it looks like the microcontroller isn't receiving the correct inputs, acting erratic. Note that what I describe below are common problems of these series and not related to the problem you are having, but I'm stating it for other people reading the thread. So it is also to be noted, that although these EX series are pretty robust, motors do get bad on them, because the lack of lubrication from factory. It's in fact extremely common to have play in the motor bushing if the unit has a lot of hours. Some of them also have a clutch gear that breaks. Shaved teeth on some gears causing increased wow&flutter is also something that can happen. They are indeed nice walkmans, but not without their problems. As a sidenote, Panasonic RQ-S/RQ-SX are much more reliable than these SONY EX. I'll link 2 of my threads covering the clutch problem and motor lubrication down below: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/wm-ex-series-tac-tac-sound-repair.7108/ https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/how-to-diassemble-and-lubricate-sony-wm-ex-fx-motor.7940/
Greetings I have owned a few of these 505 and the general advice you've already received is correct, my approach would be to sort the belt out first because often the belt moves mechanicals which in turn move switches and all are dependent on each other for correct functioning,,, start with a belt and anything else will become apparent in due course others are correct in that the capacitors won't need replacing normally in this model,,, but you will find out out! the click you hear would usually be due to a solenoid which helps set up the mechanicals in the position as per your button push, play/rew/fwd etc ... I recommend Marian @ fix your audio,, as his belts are always top-quality,, so my humble opinion is do the belt first, cleaning up switches, is something that often needs doing,, also the head phone socket can also require cleaning, but unless you're adept at this, practice on a junked player!! , when I first started I broke many in an attempt to learn! Good luck to you hope you get it going let us all know, kind regards shaman
Thanks for respond. As I said, I can't get the motor to move, so I think a new belt won’t help if I don't figure it out first. :/
Ok fine but I will say this I have seen players where the belt has failed in such a position that the mechanicals haven't allowed a through switch to conduct any signals! try to find out the default position of the switches that means with a healthy player the position the mechanicals are left in when it was last stopped,,, I have had this situation many times and I've manually wound the mechanicals until the switch is in the correct position the default position if you like! when it is in the default position it will allow signals through the switch and usually result in the motor turning as well as amplifiers activating and displays and indicators,, The same sort of thing happens when a battery has run out of power during play, you would notice that upon replacement battery insertion there will be a brief period where the motor runs/ solenoid clicks, =mechanicals return to their default position!!! I do hope this makes sense to you! Kind regards As before good luck.
Observe screwdriver pointing at slide switch, Also observe, the white mark indicating slide switch default position, if I did not this up the player would likely not respond properly
Unfortunately mechanical parts are all working, the switch is in correct place and still nothing. Probably something with electronics. I think this one will be for parts.
