I've come across some internet photos of odd boombox combinations in my searches, check out this one. Metto, it looks more like a table model with boombox features.
National TR-3010, I don't think anybody has posted this oddball from National Panasonic, I think it came out around 1978?
Looks like a decent attempt at imitating the National/Panasonic RF-5410, mixing in the grille of the RF-1150
About fifteen years ago there were three or four Chinese sellers on eBay selling "refurbished" GF777Zs and including pictures like that towards the end of their listings. Prices were around £300 to £500 including shipping depending on the condition of the actual box being sold. I guess prices only started to go up when they ran out of stock. Despite the answer given by one of our Chinese members, I still wonder if the GF777Z (most of which were made in China) was a standard issue for schools there or something. At school we had a similar number of reel to reel tape recorders in a single "Language Lab" but by the 1970s that concept had gone out of fashion and it never got used. I wonder what happened to all those decks ? Most likely sold as scrap metal.
I was looking at some of the more scarce GF-777Z photos and they are made in Japan and not China. One of the better explanations I heard was that they made a great entertainment system and became the home/business standard music system.
My new favorite, anybody seen one of these? From Design Magazine 1984, this might rank for the world's largest boombox!
probably not as big as Panasonic RX-A5 but definitely a contender! My vote goes for Panasonic RX-A2 (I am allergic to dual-cassette boomboxes/cassette decks):
Does it have a handle and a battery compartment ? If not it is simply a miniature version of one of these https://www.evansclarke.com.au/detail.aspx?id=1484152 For people who like a 3 piece I was thinking there was an Amstrad version but it turns out it was Fidelity (who would later get bought out by Amstrad). https://collections.hampshirecultur...ined-television-record-deck-cassette-deck-and It is amusing to think that while Sony was trying to convince people that TVs should be made as separates (display, tuner, speakers, etc) with their top of the range Profeel system), the low end manufacturers were trying to throw everything anyone might want into the same box. The flaw with that is that when the TV breaks the whole thing probably ended up being thrown away.
Excellent, no-nonsense review, Many Thanks!!! I was ogling RX-A2 for many years but then @Reli sold me (for next to nothing!) one of his Telefunken HiFi Studio 1 and since then I am done collecting boomboxes
