Sony ICF-7600 from 1977, I just remember the colorful AM radios that were around $5 USD back in the 70's, these must have been mind-blowing for the portable radio guys. They still look contemporary today.

I have a feeling these were more than a kid's machine at this pricing, it also looks very nice for a 3-1, the ones I saw as a kid were more toys.

Seiko Voice Mate from 1983, while not as popular, the little radios are interesting and they were also pretty expensive back then.

I recently discovered the British Newspaper Archive. I haven't registered but get an "on this day" copy of the Mirror national newspaper each year. Yesterday was 1996 and a good one.

People in the U.K. have never liked the idea of haggling but do like a bargain.
I could easily imagine someone seeing this advert, and if there was something they had had their eye on, rushing over to Dixons during their lunch hour to buy one of these products before they sold out.

p.s. The trade in is a gimmick when you could probably buy a cheap radio in the shop for £10. Trade it in and save £50 ! The same company actually did a similar scheme last year when I traded in an out of date CO alarm for a voucher.

They are really pushing the Trade-Ins, I wonder what that's all about? I would expect most of the trades to be old or new crappy transistor radios.

Probably don't want to be seen selling below manufacturers RRP i.e. the price in the Sony Centres. Linked to the same idea Dixons/Currys have been known to have models from companies like Canon exclusive to them. What is the difference from the model costing 50% more in a camera shop. The model number is different and it only has a 3.5 x zoom rather than 4 x.

Interesting, never thought of that. When the larger electronic stores started popping up in the early 80's around me they would always advertise 10% cheaper then the other guys. That lasted a few years then they got smart and started getting the same products marked with different model numbers from the manufacturer.

1994 and an offer rather than an advert.
    My First Sony.jpg

"My First Sony" wasn't a particularly cheap one back then.
Probably cheaper than letting your three year old play with your £800 iPhone/Samsung (delete as applicable).

p.s. Off topic but seeing that camera reminded me of this advert.
