That's a great question and I don't know. Somebody pulled a patent on FM cassettes that might show more of how they are put together, maybe Toshiba? They never had an antenna but I thought AM might need one a longer one. My uber rare Toshiba RP-A2 AM Cassette Radio also does not have an external antenna. It's a heavy cassette, there's stuff in it but I have no idea how it works. They used a contact pin connector, I'm guessing there's some circuits inside the player, maybe some antenna?

Old but good posted a video of the 1994 Dutch Sony catalog. I recall getting this catalog from the hifi store in town. There is a very obvious mistake in this one, from 48:30 onwards. Can you spot it in the screenshot below?
They put a DD9 picture next to the DX100 description. They're clearly talking about the DX100, as the DD9 does not have AMS function.
Indeed! Also AVLS, or remote control ('afstandsbediening') are not present on the DD9; none of the DDs had a remote.
