Sony D-800K, I thought this was neat with the gooseneck stand, anybody remember these? Back in the 90's, if you wanted to put a CD player in your older car, you'd get one of the these, they bolted to the transmission housing on the floor. Most had those crappy cassette cartridges with the cord that hooked to the headphone output on the CD player.

No idea, I thought one of the ads had the price, just going by memory (and I've been paging through dozens of magazines) I think it was around $1800 USD? The Sony XF-5000 would still hold the most expensive boombox if this is true. The Panasonic 9000 (without cassette deck) was the radio with the silly money price tag.

Throwback time! From 1971, every kid just wanted a basic tape recorder, we had hours of fun taping everything.

 

Sony from 1983, I love how the TMR-FM7 (FM broadcasting) is the center of this ecosystem. I don't think they were legal in the USA unless they were fixed to one or two different frequencies.

 

Sony 1994, WM-WX777 and does anybody know what the cool looking little blue unit is?

Even though there's a date on the bottom corner, I put the date of the published magazine issue so we can see how long the series went. I think I was doing basement duty going through old Playboys, some days the job is tough! I don't know what the lead time was back in the day, I'm sure it was several months but really don't know.
