Please educate me - I have a Panasonic RX-2700. I bought a brand new set of Panasonic headphones for it and sound is only coming out of the left earpiece. Previously I was using an old set of Apple earbuds and they work great. I get sound out of both ears. Please see pic below. The Apple buds have 4 positions on the jack. The new Panasonic headphones only have 3 positions. Is there an adapter I can buy? If so a link would be helpful. What is the correct name of such an adapter? I tried researching this myself but it was confusing as h*ll. I couldn’t make any sense of the terminology or adapter types. Some education on the specific terminology would be even better. If I plug the Panasonic headphone jack into the RX-2700 about halfway, I get sound out of both earpieces. Plugging it in the whole way silences the right earpiece. I found this link, but all it did was make everything more confusing, and I feel so ignorant I’m not even sure it’s relevant to my problem lol. https://www.quora.com/Can-I-use-headphones-with-a-3-pin-jack-on-an-Asus-VivoBook-14-laptop Thanks in advance.
Ok - Chat GTP *might* have solved the problem. I specify *might* because sometimes it hallucinates and provides inaccurate data. I’m going to dig into this and try to figure it out. —————————————————— Yes, there is an adapter you can buy to resolve this issue. The problem arises because the new headphones have a TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) plug with three contacts (two rings) designed for stereo audio, while your old headphones have a TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) plug with four contacts, which is designed for devices that use an extra contact for a microphone or additional functionality. To get sound from both earpieces on your new headphones, you will need a TRRS to TRS adapter. This adapter will properly align the connections to ensure that stereo sound is delivered to both ears. ### Adapter Options 1. **TRRS (4-Pole) to TRS (3-Pole) Adapter** - This adapter converts the 4-pole (TRRS) plug to a 3-pole (TRS) plug, ensuring that the stereo audio is correctly routed to both left and right channels. 2. **CTIA to OMTP Adapter** - Depending on your device, you might need a CTIA to OMTP adapter, which can also resolve issues related to microphone and headphone connections. ### Examples of Adapters - **UGREEN 3.5mm TRRS to TRS Adapter** - **StarTech 3.5mm 4-Pin to 3-Pin Headset Adapter** - **Cable Matters 4-Pole TRRS to 3-Pole TRS Adapter** ### Where to Buy - **Amazon**: Search for "TRRS to TRS adapter" or "4-pole to 3-pole adapter." - **Best Buy**: Check their audio accessories section. - **Local electronics stores**: Many will carry these types of adapters. ### Additional Tip Ensure that the adapter specifically mentions compatibility with headphones and audio devices, as some adapters might be designed for different purposes and may not work correctly. By using one of these adapters, you should be able to enjoy sound from both earpieces on your new headphones.
There should be no need for an adapter. As @Longman writes, problems would be expected with the Apple buds. You say that with the Apple buds you hear sound from both ears, but is it both channels from the RX2700? In the age of the Panasonic there were no 4-way jackplugs. For stereo the 3-way plug was the standard. The tip is the left channel, the middle is the right channel and the large one is ground. When you insert the Panasonic (3-way) plug halfway, only the L + R contacts and thus the L+R earpieces are used and connected in series, not via Ground. If the headphones are plugged in completely and the sound only comes from the left channel, the is a chance the R-output of the device is not OK. If the right channel is absent, this contact is used as ground for the left channel if you plug in half-way. It is possible that with the apple buds you only heard the left channel in both ears.
Put simply anything that does not have a microphone in the unit will not necessarily properly work with a four-pin headphone. Jack. So trying to use a four-pin headphone. Jack normally used for basically cell phones which is the only reason why I have these earbuds that will work now. You can take a headphone jack standard 3 pin and stick it into your cell phone. That requires a four pin for the microphone and you can get sound out of both channels. The reverse is not true. However, if you have an item that requires only a three pin input and you shove in a four-pin Jack to it, it ain't going to like it too well and it may not work properly. Well the picture rotated okay and the little black plastic wrap is a four-pin brand new set of earbuds and then the white wire is also a used pair of earbuds. Both are four pin. And then next to it, are my favorite $20 JVC on the ear headphones as I don't like screwing foreign objects into my ears like earbuds so these are comfortable clear, precise 20 bucks because I'm always breaking them. I'm sleeping on them and ruining the headsets basically so 20 bucks is cheap and these sound really decent. Bottom line if you're Panasonic only needs three pins input use only three pin inputs ditch those apples and get some sound good to you Headphones. There's the specs for those that are interested in specifications 20 bucks from microcenter.com but I went to the store cuz we have one here. I didn't go online.
Thanks for all the great info. Problem solved. Unfortunately, I have a dead R channel on my RX2700 I just bought. I have a second RX-2700 (in a little rougher shape) and I plugged in the new Panasonic headphones and both channels work fine. I’m hoping it’s just a dirty volume slider. I plan to hit it with a little detox tomorrow at work. I don’t have high hopes that will fix the problem. Usually a dirty volume slider is scratchy and cuts in and out. I’m getting nothing at all when I move the R volume slider. Additional troubleshooting / repair suggestions? I’ve fallen hard for this model. I haven’t liked a radio this much in a very, very long time. Every time I look at it I grin ear to ear. Really hoping to get the R channel going.
Wait - are you sure it is putting out stereo? A lot of these devices actually put out mono headphone jack. Your Apple 4 pin plug may have just "bridged" the contacts inside the socket and gave you the same mono channel out both L and R sides? Just a thought to test out.
It’s stereo from the headphone jack. Panasonic released it as an early response to the Walkman. Stereo headphones were included and it says “Stereo” on the front of the unit. Can be a bit confusing as it also has a single built in mono speaker.
I don't have a picture of this but I had a radio shack realistic portable AM FM cassette player that had a mono speaker on the cassette deck door and it recorded and it played back in stereo if you plugged in headphones. What happened to it was I tried to take it apart and put a new belt in it and ruined it so I tossed it
The downside of the Panasonic RX-2700 is that it’s brutal to repair or replace belts. I watched a Tech Moan video and he could not reassemble it or even get the belts in correctly. It was insanely microscopic and complex. I have new belts but don’t know if I’m going to give it a try. I have two US patents in my name for robotic technologies and have been designing and building robots since ‘85…but I gotta say, I’m really intimidated by the RX-2700 lol.
If you take it apart put switch cleaner on other contacts e.g. the record playback switch (usually mounted on the PCB). Check out the headphone jack itself. I have a WM22 that sounded absolutely awful. It turns out the ground contact on the jack had snapped so what I was hearing was the difference between L and R. Interestingly later Walkmans had mechanical fixings for the jack rather than just relying on three little terminals through the board.

I watched that TechMoan video some time back and it was painful to watch. That guy is useless at detail work and repairs in general. Working on the WM-D6C I swapped out the pinch roller twice and replaced the rubber parts "easily" and that was harder I believe. Meticulous organization and picture taking also. Having huge ham fisted hands is a severe impediment / handicap too for this kind of work.
That makes me feel a little better. I’ve watched the surgery channel before and literally plan on nearly that level of prep.
I just watched tech moan with that RX 2700. That was a giggle. I actually laughed a few times. Yeah the RX 2700 is something I'm not going to try to repair or restore. And I don't have one either. Yay. Can't wait to see your progress and your endeavors to repair that model.
Beautiful model, mine's a shelf queen for now. Once it's over look over the headphone jack wiring, they take a beating on portables and may need soldering repair. I think Faderlube might be recommended for sliders, it's also made by Caig. The sliders might have carbon which DeOxit might attack.
