I can’t believe this. Bumpbox is releasing an updated version of the legendary GF-777! I was pretty skeptical at first because their products are typically sound quantity over sound quality…but they are making solid claims that audio fidelity was a priority. Kickstarter price is $550 January 1. Some of the design choices / details bug me a little but they got it mostly right! And, it’s ridiculously feature rich! https://www.facebook.com/share/v/17A6sHLcay/?mibextid=wwXIfr Thoughts? Opinions? I’m dying to hear what everyone thinks.
Wow, looks cool and specs are cool as well, shared with my mates, also looking forward to hearing first impressions!
Same here! Reli on BBX-ry shared some pics & first impressions of a pre-production model - promising!
"Ok I heard one in person, and yeah it'll smoke any vintage, as well as the DJ Tech"....If Reli says this, I'm definitely going to want one! Now hope it actually goes into production and becomes available internationally. I'm not normally a huge fan of retro devices like the Lasonic etc, but this looks absolutely gorgeous!
Interesting. Surprising to see the quality level is higher this time around. It's honestly too early to say if I would ever buy such a reproduction boombox. But I am happy to see such projects being worked on The other forum with the thread on this is simply called bbb777 by the way.
At 28 lbs, it's going to be one of the heaviest boomers made. This is interesting "dual Japanese Cassette Deck"!!! Where did they find these?
They said the deck mechanism was modeled off a Sony design, but I'm not sure what that really means. All I know for a fact is that the playback head is indeed Japanese, and the erase head is electronic erase, not just a permanent magnet.
I’ve preordered one of the black and gold ‘founders’ versions and I absolutely cannot wait to get it!! Looks beautiful. difficult to decide between that and the OG colour scheme but I just ultimately love the b&g look more even though it’s not as retro looking.
You will like the new gold buttons & knobs, they recently made them shiny gold instead of flat gold. Also the speaker dustcaps will be gold as well
So I just watched that Techmoan video review. He noted so many issues... scary... the bumpbox team seemingly corrected them as a result. That's good - like many of the youtube video comments said - but worrying that such bugs even got through that far. What about that battery pack in the back... Propriety with weird propriety connectors by the look of it. Gotta be kidding right? How is that battery replaced in 10 years time. Maybe AI and 3D printing will have instant custom on the fly manufacturing by then and could make us a replacement for $5000 hmm? Man I must be getting old. Gimme all analog simplicity with good ol' dumb D cells in the back which allow all kinds of user provided rechargeable options etc.,
TBH, I was also concerned that the techmoan unit had so many glaring issues. Like Hyperscope stated, all of those issues should have never gotten that far at this late stage of the game. The two that really concern me are the harsh sounding treble and AC power killing the FM reception. I wrote over and over and over again asking about the sound quality and was assured it was “exceptional” and “high fidelity”. I’m hoping that the harshness fades once the speakers are broken in. Poor sound quality, or volume over fidelity (what BB is known for) would flat-out kill the product for me. The bad FM reception when running off AC seems like a simple yet glaring issue that again, shouldn’t be an issue just before production. Especially if it could have been avoided or solved with a better power supply and / or shielding. My Tivoli SongBook Max was $550 and sounds exceptional. The BB-777 Founders Edition I backed was quite a bit more. If the 777 doesn’t sound 75% as good as my Tivoli, I’m going to be disappointed. in the end, I want to remain positive and hope Rob and the crew will iron out the bugs and dial in the sound quality before we receive them.
I agree with all of your points. It kind of sounds like they internally reviewed the BB-777 in a "bubble", where they weren't really looking at it with no preconceived notions. I'm glad that Techmoan made the type of video he did. That guy will tell it like it is for sure. I DO miss his skits at the end lol. I got the (blingy) red Founders model, and was actually the last one to order one, there was 1 of 777 when i ordered - well, until someone backs out that is.
