      Well friends I can report that the HS-G500 is fully functional after a friend spent Easter working on it. The most difficult player to work on by reputation is justified. The belt specification is critical. If it's not a perfect fit the logic board will activate the STOP command but the belt tension if insufficient will fail to retract the head and unlock the cassette door. The player ends up stuck between PLAY and STOP and of course there is no manual function to stop the player. Removing the batteries doesn't resolve it. You have to dismantle again to trip the head withdrawal manually and unlock the door. Having fitted the correct belt it now works perfectly!
