Kalach Portable

I have always been passionate about technology - especially miniaturized gadgets that defy technology with their innovation. As an epitome of innovation the Walkman will always have a special place in my heart. I collect them and sometimes trade with them. Had my first one from SONY with revolutionary TV sound (at the moment) and 5 band equalizer. Little did I know the DD models but it would have been very hard to get them at the time in Colombia.

I also collected tapes - again I didn't know the technologies at the age of 12 but I knew they looked technologically advanced and super cool - it was so heavy and strongly built- My first one at age 12 was the TDK MA-R - crazy for a child to buy such an expensive item and my dad grounded me! LOL). I actually learned English (third language) only by reading my favorite magazines: Stereo Review, AUDIO, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Longevity and Road & Track. I still have the ones from the late 80s and 90s with me.

Once I traveled to Germany in 1991 I was immediately taken by the most technologically advanced Walkmans I ever saw - the super compact and amazingly great AiWAS! First time I had an AIWA in my hands! At that time I didn't know that the ones I purchased, at a rather steep cost (again everyone criticized me for spending all. my allowance of 4 months!) would be iconic and even considered the best portables they ever produced - and I agree.

They were the HS-PX303 and the HS-PX505 which I still have - one of them still in the box! At the time I also like the DD9 but couldn't afford one as a student.
Nowadays they look amazingly well cosmetically but they have come to fail, I assume because of the typical acid leakage they usually present.

Had a collection of 87 Portable cassette players (today around 40n and again growing): Sony, Aiwa, Kenwood, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp, JVC, and Philips.
My collection extends to some earlier Fontopia earphones from Sony, some iconic earbuds from Panasonic and Kenwood and some really good in-ear ones from AIWA. I also own a rather large collection of tapes from many brands and designs (including greek special editions of Sony).

I wanna share stories and technical data about portables with like-minde individuals. Love this site!
